Ta-dah the Sassafras shelf. Or Sassa Shelf lol. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but the shelf’s angle is more upward than it should be. Thanate assures me that it will help keep the things on the shelf.
Thanate had listed a certain region’s plants and animals as a theme so I chose the Sassafras Tree. This tree has distinctive leaves, which I tried to recreate. One of the leaves looks like a dinosaur footprint!
This was the first paint. I later went in and dry brushed lighter greens and browns. I used a posca pen to go over the wood grain texture to make it contrast more, as well as the veins in the leaves.
I didn’t know sassafrass was now considered unsafe– it was still in my list of “here, you can chew on this twig, it tastes nice.” (tho I ran out of space for big trees before planting one, so I haven’t done that in years either)
I’ve heard that they smell really nice even without using them for cooling ingredients or etc. I’m sure chewing on them is probably not a huge deal. There’s so much processed food in the world today that I would imagine is so much worse for a person’s health.
I’m so curious what sassafras root beer tastes like
Thank you, I had fun with the shelf idea. I used DAS air dry clay. It was pretty easy to work with though I had trouble with the clay sagging. The leaves were something extra I wanted to add on because otherwise the shelf was boring, though I thought I could paint something cool on it, it wasn’t a good idea. (Bc the main idea was the sculpture after all)
