This is a scrappy-ish basket I made for my dad for Christmas. I have a lot of recycled and upcycled silk yarns from Darn Good Yarn, and was looking for a simple hand project to do one day over the summer, while on a Zoom call with the lovely @Abbeeroad and @sheepBlue. So I grabbed a few skeins, that I might not have another use for. I had a tweedy-twisty green that contained shades of light green, forest green, brown, and gold. It was listed as a worsted, but was a bit thinner, more like a #3 weight. So I dug around and found a few cakes of matching gold silk, and one of dark brown. I didn’t have any in a light or deep green, so I raided my stash of Caron Simply Soft for those. The pattern is from My Poppet Makes, and is more like a guide. I used 4 strands of yarn, held together, and just crocheted the base until it felt wide enough, then started up the sides.
As I did, I decided I’d like some color change stripes. So I dropped the dark green, in favor of brown, then later dropped the brown for gold, and the gold for light green, etc., etc. After doing the handles and final rows, I did a slip stitch along the edge to add a bit of thickness to the rim. I never bothered to measure it, but I think it was about 9"-10" wide, and 12"-13" tall. All of dad’s little Christmas presents fit inside it, and he was interested in the whole crochet process. He asked so many questions, and later asked for a tour of my yarn stash. He was fascinated by the colors and weights, and feels of the yarns. I’ll have to make him another crocheted item for next year.
It wasn’t strictly a scrappy project, as I used some new skeins, but I did also manage to use up 3 partial skeins of Caron Simply soft, and some tiny balls of the gold silk. And any destashing, is good destashing, right?
