Scrappy Yarn Basket Craze!

I always get inspiration and motivation from members in our community. After seeing the gorgeous scrappy yarn baskets made by @MistressJennie and @marionberries , I just had to forage through my mountain of yarn scraps, ugly yarns, partial skeins, etc. and make one.

I had several balls of this green, pink, black mix yarn that I salvaged from an old project. It was in a bag headed to the reuse store. Then I grabbed every green and pink that I could find. It also gave me the chance to put away yarns that I had stashed away in other rooms, boxes, closets, etc. Now all my yarn is centrally located and organized…whew!

I just kept adding yarn until I ran out of the main yarn I used (there was a lot!).

It is fairly large. I am going to use it to store all my scraps and leftover skeins to remind me to use them up.

This is what I had left of the pink yarns…I still have leftovers of greens, but they are perfect for making frogs and cacti! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful. I love how mixing yarns creates wonderful new colors. And uses up scraps!

There was pink in the featured yarn that I was trying to destash. Fortunately, there was also four or five different hues of green. It was easy to just add in the pink once I ran out of some of the greens.

I am not a fan of pink, so I am making another one for myself and giving this one to my niece.

Thanks, all. It is always fun to share with this group!

Linda, you’re enabling me in return… I finished another one yesterday and pulled out all the random bits and bobs to lay them out and try to make piles that work together. My cutting table is covered in yarn, when I desperately need to be working on quilted totes for Ada’s teachers! :joy:

This one is smaller, but I love how it came out. The inspiration yarn was a metallic novelty string yarn that’s super scratchy. I don’t even know where it came from. It was black, purple and gold. Hmmm…. This pic isn’t doing the basket justice. It’s prettier and more textured in person.

So good! I think I have a very similar metallic itchy yarn in my pile of unwearable yarns!

I like making these because of so many reasons:

  1. Fun to put together colors, textures, and weights of yarn
  2. Destash small leftovers that really aren’t big enough for full projects but too good to throw out
  3. Make something functional. I use these for all sorts of storage and project bags. Also make nice gifts for those who like this sort of thing.
  4. Easy to crochet while watching tv. Relaxing and “mindless”.

Yup, you just listed all the reasons I like making them. And the baskets sell well at our annual church craft fair. That way I don’t have piles of baskets sitting around the house.

I am going to check with a few of the churches to see if they want to sell baskets and hats. Great idea!

That is a gorgeous basket! Your handles are very nice, talented lady. Looks like a simple, repetitive stitch but somehow it highlights the yarn colors. My signature colors too!

Congrats on reducing your stash in such a practical way. I absolutely love the color gradient in the first one. Reminds me of tourmaline stones.
