Sculpture Swap SO - April 13

Yes! Oven bake clay for me! It’s not my main art medium, but I do have experience with it.

I am trying air dry clay for the first time. I am a little nervous to be honest.

Which brand are you using? Maybe I can give advice.

I’ve tried air dry clay (Crayola model magic, lol) and packs from the dollar store that look like terracotta. Each has its own unique qualities.

Sculpd. I have been watching videos on YouTube. I also have some Das in my cart if this brand doesn’t feel right.

I’m doing “real” clay & sculpted a Thing in the studio yesterday morning, but tbd whether it’s going to be The Thing. (I’m working on several projects that want sculpted little guys, so I’ll have a bunch of options to chose from assuming they all make it safely through firing.)

And my clay options are actually kind of broad– I’ve presently got two different types of stoneware, a porcelain, a studio-made sculpture clay, & a couple of wild clays to play with, but I’m mostly using the stoneware & sculpture clays for what I’m working on at the moment, all of which I’ve done a bunch with.

Ohh I haven’t tried that one! I guess as you’re playing around with it make a note of how long you have until it starts getting stiffer and crumbly. With air-dry clay you have to work sort of quickly, or, if you need to stop mid-project put it in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel over it to keep it from drying out. I’d also keep a damp paper towel over your unused clay in the container to be safe.

If you have any thin parts of your plan (arms, branches, etc) I’d test that out too to see how fragile it is after drying.

I thought I knew what I wanted to do but this morning I’m feeling inspired to go a completely different direction. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using air dry clay but I might pivot if I can’t get it to do what I want.

I am so excited to start, but tonight I have to make a bunch of brownies for a bake sale at work to benefit a local shelter. Wednesday night I plan on pulling things out and testing the material. I have a couple ideas that, if they work, I can use in STS. Win-win!

We’re on the same wavelength

Finally had some time to catch up on the chat thread. I’ve been on vacation for the past week. Excited for this swap!

I’m also planning on trying air dry clay for the first time. :purple_heart: I’m going to try using Das clay. :purple_heart:

I bought both Das and Sculpd to see which I liked better.

I have two ideas I’ll be playing with. One is paper mache (which I’ve done several times) the other may or may not use Cosclay - something I have but haven’t used yet. If both go to heck, I can always fall back on my Sculpey.

Cosclay is “a next-generation hybrid polymer clay with a unique plastic-rubber blend that stays flexible even after curing” according to their website.

I follow someone on twitch who uses cosclay and it looks really nice to work with. Where did you get it from? Not that I need more things to try, but you know

Like @gozer I also have some sculpd and das air dry to try and think polymer might be my backup (I’m currently looking at pasta machines for conditioning polymer clay to save my hands if I do go that route)

I didn’t get to sign up for this one, but I’m going to follow along and live vicariously through all of you. I cannot wait to see the gallery! I know it’s going to be amazing already. :hearts:

I have chosen my material. Paper mache and I have made literally one paper mache item in my life for Elliott’s 6th bday. It was a death star pinata. So that was only like 12 years ago. Hah.

This time I think things are going to be a bit more detailed and involved. I have 3 solid layers and I want to add 2 more before I start building out from the base.

I admire folks who use paper mache… I simply do not have the patience for such long drying times :sweat_smile:

I’m planning on a thing with paper clay, maybe, and another thing with possibly sculpey. I’m too slow for air dry clay!

I haven’t decided yet :frowning: I’m leaning towards paper mache or air dry clay. Minimal experience with either.

My mom gave me a block of blue glow in the dark cosclay as a birthday present last year so no idea where it was bought. I wanted it because I had this super vague idea of making cute little ghost figures, and naturally I never did. The block joined the horde of other craft supplies I had to have to make that specific, something. My craft ADD is alive and well and keeping half the craft stores in my area in business.
