Sculpture Swap SO - April 13

I am planning to do a mini thing and a main thing. Started the mini thing tonight and it’s been humbling.. after being at it for over an hour, suddenly 3+ hours doesn’t seem like enough time! Bah!

Ok I think I have to be more realistic with my goals.. I’m pivoting the initial plan but I’m very happy with the progress I’ve made so far (wish I could show yall!)

I’m weird… don’t get jet lag. And daylight savings change doesn’t effect me. I do appreciate it staying light later though.

Have not picked my subject yet.

Still brainstorming ideas. I can’t stand Daylight savings time! I feel like I’m tired everyday since the time change, no matter how much sleep I get.

ACK SORRY I somehow didn’t bookmark this and didn’t see this until now!

I’m aining for high-fire porcelain, which is something I work with the most, but can also be finnicky (especially when I usually throw with it and I’m working on handbuilt/carved stuff). I’m most worried about giving it enough drying time so it doesn’t crack or get weird.

I have a primary idea (and a few others) that I’ve been hoping to get started on, but our weather has been super wonky and I haven’t made it into my work space to get started. I think the heavy heavy rains will hopefully let up a little bit by tonight and I’ll feel like I can get back to work.

We don’t do daylight savings time changes here, but it does make it tricky because then I have to keep track of the difference between us and time zones on the continent…

I started the first project and used up my remaining leftover paper clay. Now I need to make more, so I will inevitably wind up with extra and will have to come up with another new project!

DST is disruptive but I prefer this schedule to the dark winter standard time. It was nice to get home from work before the sun set.

It was 89 degrees on Tuesday & Wednesday. Then it plummeted to 28 and snow heavy, heavy snow for over two hours on Thursday afternoon. It was crazy. I think everyone is have bizzaro weather!

Doing some practicing today and realizing the air dry clay in my super dry studio might be more of a challenge than I realized. I’ve got a couple samples drying under plastic wrap and we will see how they come out (maybe sanding will save me).

I sanded and did a gesso layer. I think i should have sprayed it first. We will see. Its drying now.

I finally got started, but holy heck there is so much moisture in the air and I’m worried about getting this dry on time! Lol

The construction part is done mostly and I’m really rather proud of it so far. I’m a little worried about painting it. I’m not the best painter so I’m going to have to think through that part carefully….

Check In Question 3

Are you feeling inspired to sculpt more after this swap?

I am! I made three items already. They are practice. The best one is the one I plan on sending. I still have to learn how to paint it. I did a layer of gesso, but it just pealed right off. I am letting it dry even more. I will try again this weekend.
In the meantime, I have another, small project I want to try. If it works out, it will be for STS.

Yeah, quite possibly. I mean it amazes me that I didn’t actually spend a ton money on this project. I will have to buy a supply but it’ll cost me maybe $10. Everything else I had at home. I’m seriously dreading painting it though…like seriously. I like how its coming together and I don’t want to screw it up.

This is not going to move my baseline, but I did have some fun playing with a couple things I wouldn’t normally make.

(the Thing should get bisque fired this week, & then I get to figure out what I’m doing for glaze…)

I had a lot of fun sculpting my practice piece. My eldest son and I had.some quality time together. We both made a Devil Fruit from an anime we like. It’s still drying lol

My son says he wants to make a lot more things so we’ll be done more for sure.

I love that @manders!

I completely understand @Rlynn . I have been going over color themes in my head. I don’t want to mess it up!

It’s always 100x easier for me to creative for others rather than for myself or just because which is why I love swaps!

Which clay are you using? When I tried the sculpd air dry clay in the past I had problems painting it even after using their primer.

My test pieces with DAS air dry clay are still drying (I put them under a cloth to try to slow down the drying to avoid cracking). I’m hoping to have better luck with painting them. I’ll report back when one of the pieces is dry and I can try experimenting on it, hopefully tomorrow.

I’m finding sculpting to be very humbling :). It’s fun but a lot harder than expected (physically and skill wise). My hands are super flared up so I’m hoping painting can save me since I won’t be able to do any sanding.
