I just went for it, looks like this after serging.
Looks like you are off and running!
I remember when I was a teen making my own clothes, I just sort of went for it. It was exhilarating when things worked out! I am excited for you, Jenn. It is like watching a flower bloom.
Has anyone used the maxi-lock stretch thread for their loopers? I’m wondering if it would be softer than regular maxi-lock.
Second serger question - what do you do with your tails? Do you trim them? Tuck them in?
I usually use a small crochet hook and pull them into the seam under the threads. I have also just cut them short and pulled on them to sort of lock the stitches tighter. Don’t do the latter if you are using your serger for the seam and the finish because if it breaks, you will then have to sew again.
I have used the stretchy threads for heavier knits and like them. It is softer than regular thread. You could also try a longer stitch length so that the overlock is not so tight. It will make for a softer seam.
Good tip about the stitch length, I’ll play with that!
I know when I stitch too tight, my seams also want to curl or get wavy. Try it out on different fabrics. I have a little cheat sheet with tension adjustments, stitch length, etc. for different types of fabric. It just takes a lot of making to get things exactly like you want!
Coverstitch question, should I use my regular sewing thread or my serger thread?
Are you using it to finish off the hems so that the stitching shows on front? I normally use serger thread but if I want the color to match, I have used normal large spool thread. I don’t usually have four spools of normal thread, though, so I wind bobbins of the thread and use them.
Thanks!
And yet another question :).
How does everyone store their threads? Any ideas how to store these Gutermann Mara spools (right)? I kind of want to get a spool rack so I can see the colors but I think these might be too tall.
I have a spool box and they fit in there. Realistically though, I’ve got them in white and black and they’re almost always on my machine.
I leave white in my Kenmore since I use that the most.
I store the cones in a bin
and have two racks for colored threads for my embroidery machine. The racks do hold Gutterman. You can see how I store the matching bobbins with those peg things.
I also use these because I am bad at putting the threads back into my closed thread cases. One is for neutrals that I use a lot and other is for various colors.
Good to know! Do you think it would be secure enough if the racks were wall mounted?
Edited to add, I just looked at your photos again and it looks like you do have them wall mounted. Perfect, thanks!
Just be sure to get the ones with the longer posts. Mine hold 60 spools each.I just measured and mine are 1-1/2 inches long. Yes, they are wall mounted
You can DIY spool mounts for peg board, 3d print or laser cut, so you get exactly what you want. Just saying ![]()
I was looking at those but kind of want the wood esthetic. Until I realized the ones like Linda has would work I was going to have my husband make me some this weekend. Linda saved him from having to drill 120 holes and cut little pegs ![]()
I think these will be perfect! Thanks for the ideas and pics! (It looks bright in there because of the reflected light from the window and it being dark in the room, that window does not get any direct sunlight)
It will be colorful and satisfying to see them all. The wood adds a nice organic touch.
Ok after getting out my cover stitch machine and being throughly intimidated by threading it for some reason I think I’ll call the store where I bought it and setup my free lesson :). I could just pull the threads through but I’d rather learn how to do it from scratch. The serger doesn’t intimidate me at all but the cover stitch ![]()
My latest 3d print find, large bobbins for holding fold over elastic. I might transfer my twill tape over to them too off of the cardboard ones I made previously.
Very clever! Good storage for those things that tend to tangle in a drawer is a very nice solution.
