Sign writing

This weekend was spent at a traditional sign writing course. It was a two day course, very intense requiring a lot of focus.

I wouldn’t have said that I am a patient person, but I keep picking up crafts that require a lot of meticulousness.

Anyway this was what I made, it still has some chalk marks but I can’t wipe them off for a couple of days as we used sign writing enamel and it’s slow to dry.

For my studio

The process involves rules, rulers, pencils etc. Then letters are traced and shadows etc added to the tracing paper

Chalked on the back to transfer to a board and then layers are applied from the shadows first to the letters last. It’s slow!!

I added an extra black line around the letters, as it makes them pop.

What a cool class! And your sign turned out so authentic-looking! I mean, it’s a real sign, but it truly looks like the traditional sign-painting style that it is. Good for you for harnessing your inner meticulousness!

This is so, SO cool! And your makers mark would be most excellent copied for cards, greeting and business sized. I adore the imperfect perfection on it all, especially with the chalk lines. Makes it look structurally schematic.

Actually they would make great business cards, I should get on to that.

That looks fantastic! I also love the sketchy version with just chalk on the board.

Wow, it sounds like such an involved process. I love your sign and am impressed by your abilities (especially knowing that there’s so much involved)!

The letters do really pop! The colors and style make me think of the Superman comics. Maybe you are Supercrafter!

That sounds like a really fun class. And I love the idea of turning it into business cards. I think the step with just the shadows and the white outlines looks amazing. You could use it for a more subtle version.

Some of the stuff you get into really makes me go, “What? That’s a thing?” And I’m always amazed by the results!

And that’s not even all! I heard a story about another sign maker in the class who does optical illusion grass paintings! It really is the niftiest skill, so cool.

And she’s a very cool person. She’s going to take me to do the 3d stadium painting with her at some stage.
