Sir Breen (Digital Pastels Painting)

MEDIUM: Pastels in Rebelle 3 on Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with Surface Pen

I’m calling “Sir Breen” finished. I could continue to futz with it forever if I don’t cut myself off. Also I was excited about sending it to my friend, whose fic (a variation on “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”) it’s basically an illustration for.

The axe was a later addition (because of course it had to be in there! That’s the point of the scene - head smack moment of idiocy when I realized that), but it threw off the composition somewhat. I tweaked it by adding more bolder greens in the background (while still trying to keep it sketchy and, well, background).

I think I like the Pastels tool in Rebelle. It’s quite impressive at how it behaves like pastels would on the various paper options (this was regular hot pressed), and when applied directly onto paper with pastels already on it. The smudge tool behaves kind of digitally, but the blend tool works great for emulating smudging/blending. And the pastel tool is highly textured and can only get so detailed (hence avoiding the trap of over-detailing while zoomed in).

Beautiful composition! There’s such lovely texture and I love the rough sketch quality that peeks out in parts. I’m sure your friend will adore it!

Very cool. And I don’t know why but for some reason I love that you made him a redhead.

It was a hit with the writer friend and her partner, who is a medievalist! (I feel like I passed expert review😅)

You can thank my friend for that; she chose a ginger character for the role. But I think it does work well with the composition! (I tried to give him freckles but they didn’t come through very well).
