Small Batch Apple Butter

My DH and I love apple butter! I was hopeful that it wouldn’t be too hard to master so I made a small batch to test out before we went to town. It turned out wonderfully! Definitely a little different than the store bought alternative, but still absolutely delicious.

I adapted a recipe from One Dish Kitchen and here are the changes I made:

  • 6 medium Pink Lady apples
  • 4 tablespoons of white and brown sugar
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Generous shake of cinnamon
  • Generous shake of ginger
  • a pinch of whole cloves (I crushed them in my mortar + pestle)
  • one star anise pod

I cooked my apples down on high in my slow cooker for 4 hours, stirring occasionally, then removed the lid and cooked for an additional hour on low. I then removed the anise and used my immersion blender to create that creamy consistency that really screams apple butter.

Here’s the final product! It produced just enough to fill this tiny ball canning jar with a little left over that we immediately used.

 Mmm, yes, that time of year again! Apple butter on everything, please!

We love apples so much. Apple butter, apple sauce, baked apples—- the list goes on. Very grateful that the weather has a bit of a nip in it to really make it feel like fall. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
