I have a dress that includes a skirt made with multiple straight panels with half and quarter circle (not gores) godets. It’s super floaty and twirly and I love wearing it. Some time back I bought 10 yards of cotton voile from Fabric Mart Fabrics for $3/yard and always intended to make a version of that skirt, but never had, until now. The skirt includes eight 8" straight panels, with four half-circle and four quarter-circle (not gores) godets. I finished it all with a 1/4" rolled hem, all 15 yards of it. I know the hem is uneven, but it’s uneven on the example skirt as well and there is so much fabric that ultimately I just am not that bothered by it. Also, I did the whole thing with French seams because of the fineness of the fabric, and let me tell you, the Y intersections for the (not gores) godets were harrowing.
I don’t know what all that means (semi circle gore ), but I do know this turned out really nice! I can only imagine the twirl factor with such a flowy, circly skirt.
Thank you for the first pic, I never would have guessed that one of those ruffly (perhaps semi circle gore?) areas was concealing that much fabric.
Technically these are godets not gores, and I should edit my original post. It’s when you open a straight slit in a piece (or pieces) of fabric and insert a wedge of additional fabric to increase the fullness at the bottom. Normally it’s a triangular insert. Like a reverse dart. Until I bought the inspiration dress I had never seen one that was an entire half circle.
A full circle skirt is pretty full already. This skirt has three total circles in the fullness, plus almost 2 yards of additional straight hem. The voile is a very delicate fabric; I wouldn’t be able to move in something heavier. lol
Wow! That’s a lot of fabric, and I bet one twirly skirt! It’s crazy because it looks so light.
Yeeeehaw! Your splediforous cra ft is one of this week’s Featured Projects!
Lovely skirt!
This is so fun! And I love the color too. 🩵
That’s a lot of fabric! It’s really pretty.
so much hem!!! Hope the fun of wearing it is worth the work!
(& I’m kind of giggling about the “(not gores)” notations…)
