Spiral Stitch Basket

I am learning some new stitches and skills in the Making Zen sessions (which end today!).

I really wanted to learn about the spiral stitch for making baskets but didn’t have the raffia that the instructor used. I could have used jute, yarn, fabric strips, etc. but I really wanted to do the raffia.

I decided to do a different project (which I will also do later). While looking around for upholstery scraps in my basement/overflow craft room, I came across a bag that I thought held scraps…lo and behold! I believe I bought this to make a tiny dotee way back on Deadster! I can’t believe this survived my three moves

I present my first spiral stitch basket!

Where is the spiral, you ask? On th bottom!

Thanks for looking! I have enough raffia to make a larger basket, so I will add it to my ever growing “to do” list!

That is very cool!

Putting mod hat on, one suggestion: if you flip your first and second pictures your lovely finished basket will be the main image displayed for your post.

I took basket weaving as an elective when I was in college. It took a lot more preparation and I had to source the materials most of the time.

This method is a lot easier with materials that can range from jute, fabric strips, plastic bags, pine needles, etc. I can’t wait to see how it works with fabric scraps.

This is really cool, and was clearly meant to be!!
