Stained Glass Sugar Skull

This was my first stained glass project back in early 2022  I spent some time doing a travel nursing assignment during covid and used the extra funds to buy needed supplies for glass as a treat after all that trauma.

My mother in law requested a sugar skull that would memorialize her brother who passed from complications of AIDS when she was younger. I added the red ribbon for awareness and used his favorite color, purple, for the flowers around the eyes. I tried to use black placement to make the figure “pop” when designing the pattern. Since this was my first project a lot of the finishes weren’t as flawless as I’d like but my mother in law loves it!

This was also a big lesson for me in designing patterns that don’t require a ring saw if possible. It’s just so fiddly and hand cuts are much more satisfying for me personally

That is gorgeous and the design is pure perfection. I’m really impressed with the curves you got and the tight seaming.

This is so cool! I love that you made your own design and that you have such a sweet meaning behind it. Have you made any more?

This is probably the only piece I’ll ever make with this pattern but that makes it even more special for the recipient :grinning: I was new to designing patterns and almost every curve in the pattern I made required reinforcing with copper tape and trimming with an X-Acto knife. On both sides  Here’s a photo after reinforcing but before trimming:

I’ve made other stuff, though! Trying not to spam the site with all the pieces I’ve made at one time. I’ll post more as I dig through photos

This is a lovely piece! It’s also really cool to see the wip pics because I don’t know anything about the process.
