Stonewall inspired diorama

Made a Stonewall inspired diorama : )

Please excuse the sudden lack of progress photos mid craft, I forgot to take them.

I started with clay rectangles, I don’t have much to say except making bricks out of polymer clay is extremely tedious.

I then beat them up with a rock until they looked vaguely like chewed gum.

Here’s an ominous photo I took while deciding the layout.

And then I painted them. After the first paint I kind of dry brushed more impatiently wet blended tiny amounts of orange on to the bricks. Which is why they aren’t maroon like in the first photo.

And now I completely stop taking progress photos.

Suddenly I’m done! The grout(?) in-between the bricks is made of modpodge, white paint, and a ridiculous amount of sand, dirt, and small pebbles.

And then obviously I painted some flags on the bricks, included are the trans flag, lesbian flag, rainbow flag, bear flag, and the leather flag. And also a brick with a violet, lavender, and a green carnation. Violets are a lesbian symbol, lavender is a queer symbol, and green carnations are a gay symbol.

A fake receipt made from some paper while I was bored at work, a weird plastic thing made from some tape also made at work, some small cigarettes made from rolled paper, and some glass I picked up when I was like 6 and then stuck in a bottle.

Clay version of the sign the police left behind at the Stonewall Inn after the raid, it’s a bit messy because I’m impatient and never let things dry properly.

More glass and fake paper trash!

You know that I think this is amazing. I won’t embarrass you by putting my mom hat on and going on and on endlessly, but I love all the little details. Very creative and impressive.

I will add that I snorted when you mentioned the glass you collected when you were six. The neighbors hard core judged me for that. :joy:

This is AMAZING! I mean, it just looks cool, but it’s also got so many great details in honor of the event and place.

whispers: (oh, it’s mortar between bricks)

Fantastic! I love those tiny cigarettes!

Just a little mod note. If you put a finished pic as the first pic, then that will be the thumbnail.

That’s incredible and gorgeous. The details really bring it to life and what a beatiful way to honor a dark corner of history while highlighting progress made and progress lost. Simply stunning.

I don’t know how I missed this one until now! It’s absolutely stunning. Great work! It’s a memorial for a time in history that we should not forget, and a warning for us all too.

On top of that it’s also technically very impressive. The brick and mortar look so incredibly realistic. I actually like that the sign is a bit messy, I thought that was on purpose. A very happy accident. The sign clearly fell off on to the dirty street, it rained, someone walked over it.
