A friend gave me this jacket several years ago. I haven’t had a chance to wear it but I’ll be taking a trip soon and thought it would be just right for that. Unfortunately, when I took it out of the closet, I saw it was riddled with moth holes 
. Also there was damage to one sleeve and wristband. I decided to try mending it.
First, I carefully hand washed it and blocked it to dry. (It’s made of wool knit.) I didn’t iron it but when I’m wearing it, it’s a close fit so ironing isn’t really necessary.
Then I began stitching up the moth holes. The more holes I repaired, the more I discovered(!) My first repairs were not very skillful 
. Hopefully they won’t be too noticeable. By the end I was able to do a much better job.
I sewed up the large hole on the sleeve. I originally intended to cover it with an appliqué, but I changed my mind after discovering how well the heartfelt brooch looked on the jacket.
It’s hard to see in the photos but there was a large hole in the wristband of one sleeve. I couldn’t see any way to repair it so I re-covered both sleeve bands with some wool felt I had. I couldn’t match the jacket color and I didn’t try. I like the contrast of the lighter pink.
Then, instead of appliqué, I sewed rows of ribbon around both sleeves just above the band to cover the large hole.
The repairs took quite a long time (many hours) because I did all the sewing by hand.
The fabric is very thin in spots from the moth damage. But hopefully it will last through my trip, at least. If it continues to degrade, I may have to remove the brooch and go the appliqué route after all.
