Tabletop Zen Garden

I needed a gift for a “competition” I was running at work, and it was a very frustrating competition - so I determined the winner needed something relaxing! What’s more relaxing than a Zen garden?

Well, making one sure isn’t, I can tell you that. But in the end, I think it turned out okay:

First problem - making the rake. I do not have a drill press and trying to drill by hand… the tines were a little wonky. Solution - drill the holes over-large, then glue them in such a way they look even enough!

Second problem - sand. Now, I know they sell zen garden sand, but I’m making these prizes with my own money and I’m cheap. So I tried getting play sand… which was wet, and I had to bake it, then I tried sifting it…

And it was awful:

I scoured the internet, and found some people suggesting baking soda as an alternative, and I think it works well enough - it may eventually clump, but it’s also acting as a deodorizer and it’s cheap to replace!

Oooh, baking soda is a cleaver idea and a useful one for deoderizing an area. The zen garden looks very peaceful.

Baking soda is a genius idea! And this turned out very peaceful looking, even if it was a stressful process for you!

Very cool prize!

Lol…how ironic that making a Zen garden isn’t so Zen. Glad you persevered because the end project is awesome!
