This is not the skirt I originally intended to make out of this gorgeous fabric. However, this style of skirt also doesn’t require a pattern. And that’s why it won’t out over the other one.
The fabric…
If I remember correctly, it’s a 50/50 cotton-linen blend. But, it might just be cotton. Too lazy to look it up. It’s from the ‘Moody Bloom’ line by Moda Fabrics. I bought it at the same time as the fabric I used for the pinafore dress, intending to make a blazer from the other with this one as a coordinating floral skirt. So, I can wear the pinafore over this skirt and it will pair very nicely. I used almost all of the four yards I had.
The pattern (or lack thereof)…
I was going to use this nice button-up skirt pattern, but that would mean making adjustments for an elastic back waistband and choosing buttons and sewing buttonholes. Too much work! Cut rectangles and pockets, sew, thread elastic, finish. Okay, there’s also a lot of gathering in there, to be fair. But, that hemline is almost 14 feet and that kind of swishiness is impossible to pass up.

Another beautiful skirt!
I have a similar button front skirt pattern and just did not like how the buttons looked across my tummy. I know I should have made an adjustment to accommodate a pouch, but…yeah
I much prefer your gathered skirt and how pretty it must swirl with that hem.
Thank you! That’s the nice thing about making your own clothes - you can just make what works for you. I’m perimenopausal and I just can’t deal with anything fitted through the hips or fixed waistbands anymore. The elastic gives my waist enough definition to give the illusion of an hourglass shape and the full skirt hides everything else.
That fabric is really beautiful! Good choice making the type of skirt that’s most comfortable for you. It’s a waste of such a nice fabric to make a skirt out of it that stays in the closet, unworn.
I am actually going to make a skirt like your original plan soon (from a lightweight denim fabric) but I made a toile first to check if the waistband didn’t bother me. What I love about garment sewing is how easy it is to customize our clothes to fit our bodies and lifestyle - longer or shorter sleeves or bodice, the most comfortable waistband, the right size of pocket in exactly the right place.
