My daughter just turned 3 and we got her a balance bike. She loves taking things with her on her adventures, as well as picking up treasures out in the wide world, so I decided to make a bike basket to go on the front. I’m sure her tastes will change as she gets older, but for now she’s into Bluey, and the color purple, so I grabbed a Bluey fat quarter out of my stash. (Gee, I guess you were right Ada. We did need that FQ you insisted on picking up at Walmart, and wouldn’t let go of.) I followed this tutorial from Makeit Loveit.
I used a black FQ for the lining, and when it was all done, I went to put it on the bike, only to discover the tutorial that I was following, had a much skinnier cross bar on the front, and my loops wouldn’t fit unless I removed the padding from the bike. No chance on that front. So I went through my stash of leftover binding, and found some black and white stripe that worked great to make new loops.
I love how it can be folded closed to keep your treasures safe, or the top edge can be folded down, more like a traditional basket. I tossed in a mini first aid kit in case of falls and scrapes, and there’s still tons of room for pinecones and dandelions, and gumballs, and rocks… Best of all, the kiddo seems to like it.
