Travel buddy rescue

I have a Kenneth Cole backpack that I LOVE and it’s my faithful travel companion.

But the top handle on the bag was made of icky cheap pleather and needed some help.

This “simple” repair with a piece of actual leather was the BIGGEST pain in the 4$$.

But even though it’s not as pretty as I’d hoped, it’s done.

This is what I started with:

Nice save!

I have a few handbags that I have had for years. The handles seem to get the worst of wear, like yours! Also, a bit along the bottom corners. Seems a waste to not try to make them look more respectable.

Did you use a leather needle? I have one for hand sewing and it is fabulous for leather and denim. I have a few for my sewing machine but have never used them.

No I don’t think I have a leather needle. It probably would have helped!!

The revamp looks great! I’ll have to try that next time my fave purse has strap issues.

Thank you, friends!

Great save! Repairing loved items is such a wonderful ability of crafty people.

I have to agree with @AIMR using leather needles makes a world of a difference. I wish I knew they existed for hand sewing, before I embroidered my leather patch last year. The sewing machine type is formed into a little blade on the backside. That way they don’t need to punch through the leather but rather cut through it.

Thank you!

And thanks for the info about the needles, too!

Nice repair! I’m trying to be better about mending versus pitching and buying new.
