Vivienne finds comfort and feels safe in a crate, so we bought one to go in the car to help her overcome her nervousness. It will also help keep her from becoming a projectile should we have a fender bender or slide around on icy roads. The pad that came with it is… not great. We’re never going to be able to maintain the whiteness of the cover and the insert is a packing material type foam - very firm.
So, I picked up some upholstery foam and a few fabrics to make an easier to clean and more comfortable version. After cutting the foam (2 layers of 1"), I made a zippered cover out of a moisture-repellent nylon to protect the foam.
When hunting around JoAnn for suitable cover fabric, I decided to make a cool-weather version from this very nice fleece. I bought the fabrics a few days before the liquidators took over, so the sale prices were actually better than the going-out-of-business sale’s starting prices. The zipper selection was pretty sparse already, so all them are grey.
I tried not to buy much extra fabric, so I didn’t have enough to pattern match or anything, not that I would be likely to try with dog cushion covers anyway, but I did notice while making them. Another thing I noticed while cutting on the floor is that Vivienne has become very interested in sewing!
How great that she can now ride around in style and comfort! That cushion looks much more cushy than what you received and the non-white covers make way more sense!

So great when you can make functional things for your family and pets!
I am sure she is more interested in being with you than sewing…she wants to be near her mom!
The two pads look cozy and pretty…good fabric choices to go with the crate as well.
Her ears are so expressive! And she can make all the poses. She hasn’t outgrown asymmetrical ears and I hope she never does! Sometimes she’ll even do the other ear!
