Tricky Tray Donation: Quilted Zip Pouch!

My daughters had a Bingo and tricky tray fundraiser for cheerleading this past weekend and I volunteered to donate a basket. I knew I wanted to make something for it, but I wasn’t sure what until I came across this tutorial for a scrappy zipper pouch. It looked so fun to make and right up my alley since it does not require precise piecing.

Here’s a pic of my donated basket for thumbnail purposes:

But before I had a pouch I was happy with, there was some backstory we have to go through. My first attempt was…ok. Zippers and I have a fraught history and this was no exception.

It’s so wavy! Ugh. While I love the look of this pouch and it is very much my style, I just wasn’t feeling like it was donate-worthy. Here are a couple more pics. I also had trouble catching all the layers at one point with the zip and had to fix/fudge a section. I was happy with the lining.

After being depressed about my pouch for a day or so, I rallied and decided to try again. I got some pre-cut fabric strips to speed up assembly and some fabric glue to help with the zipper situation.

I also replaced my needle and gave the bobbin case a good clean, hoping it would help.

Here’s the 2nd pouch right before the moment of truth…(I also wanted to show the glue I used for reference):

And…much better!

I think the zipper ends came out better in pouch #1 (which went to my friend Jes for her B-day, so it still got a loving home). I think I stitched in to far at that seam on V2. But overall, I deemed V2 donate-worthy. I hope whoever won it likes it!

Your pouches look great, I love the scrappy patchwork feel.

What’s a tricky tray? Translation for those of us across the pond needed.

Haha…sorry! It’s like a big raffle of curated baskets, local gift cards, and other donated goods. Our big ticket item was a TV, for example.

Glad you asked, otherwise I would have had to

Both pouches are nice, zippers can be tricky at times.

Thank you!

Your patchwork bags are just so funky and fun. Have you tried Washable Wonder Tape to help hold down the zipper without pins? It helps a lot with the wavyness. You don’t need to wash it away unless you want to. It also adds a bit of stability if you don’t.

So many uses for it to improve sewing!

I haven’t! Since I was sewing the V2 pouch the day before the fundraiser, I had to get something in stock at the store. All of the fusible options I saw on the shelf said not to sew. I was worried about gumming up my machine, which the glue thankfully didn’t do!

If there is any gumming, it is usually the needle. I swear by teflon needles and scissors. Nothing sticks to them.

Your pouch came out great! I’m sorry you had a tough time with them, but it was totally worth it.
