Turmeric ginger shots

My sweet daughter tried some commercially prepared ginger turmeric shots and liked them enough to want to have them on the daily but they are so costy! She’s a crafty gal so she asked me to source some 2 oz glass bottles and pick up ingredients to DIY. I got a top of the line juice press about 25 years ago that’s still going strong and it handled this project beautifully. It took about 45 minutes to process a big batch of fresh turmeric and ginger root, fresh lemons, and a bunch of apples. We added a bottle of echinacea tincture.

30 glass bottles washed and filled to about 1.5 oz each to leave room for freezing. They did freeze perfectly and she had a week’s worth in a jar in the fridge and another week’s worth in a jar in the freezer, so the yield for her was a month and a half.

The left over pulp was fairly dry but ginger and turmeric are powerful roots so I boiled it all up in a very large pot and then strained it after about an hour. The resulting “tea” was so thick and orange, I cooled it in the fridge overnight and ordered 30 4 oz bottles for Robert and I to have a shot each day.

Added a bottle of astragalus to ours.

The commercial shots are $8 for four 1oz bottles, we made 171 oz which would have cost $342! The bottles were a one time investment, the tinctures cost about $60, and the rest of the ingredients maybe $20 so I consider that a fantastic win. To be honest, we could boil the pulp again and it would be almost as strong. We may dehydrate it to use in curry, no waste!

Wow! It really pays to DIY sometimes! And you have the added benefit of knowing what’s really in there and that it’s truly all fresh and natural ingredients.
