Unmentionables Undertaking (sew-along)

Sounds like a great dream though! I have seen those bras advertised online but I’ve not seen them available in stores. I can’t really imagine buying a bra online unless it’s a brand/model you already own.

With how common it is to not be symmetrical you’d think the industry would offer solutions, plenty of customers would buy them. The difference for me is big enough that a standard underwire bra doesn’t stay in place but moves towards the bigger side during the day, even though I buy the size that fits the biggest one. It’s annoying.

I work in a very cold office with mostly men so for work I prefer padded-type cups. I know it’s only a natural process and I’m not ashamed or anything, but I would also rather not see my coworkers’ hard body parts through their clothes, no matter how natural that is, so I try to cover mine too.

The very cold office setting is an important factor in your choice of bras. I can understand your situation.

Cutting out my pattern this morning

And realizing I didn’t trace and/or cut my pattern symmetrically

Since it’s stretch jersey and my first pair I’m just going to roll with it and see what happens. I don’t expect these to fit perfect right away so I foresee plenty of pattern adjustments in my future.

Also, I’m convinced stretch jersey is why people are afraid of sewing with stretch fabric. So slippery and drapey.

It can be very forgiving with well placed elastic.

That’s the hope :joy:.

I also got some stretch maxi-lock thread to use in the loopers of my serger, I think it’s supposed to be more like “wooly nylon” and softer against the skin.

That color is gorgeous! And the pattern looks pretty comfy.

They’ll be fine.

I rarely wear bras anymore. If I do, they are soft knit sports bras or camis with a bit of support. I can’t seem to find camis that are long enough or that fit much looser like a t-shirt. I’m going to see if I can find a pattern for a cami/undershirt type garment.

I have bras in my drawer with the tags still on them because they just do not fit. I am not large breasted and I am not even so there are always gaps.

I love that the color selection for undies is way better in fabric than I see at the store…beige, black, white or some ugly print!

I’m always surprised by people who can not wear bras. I’m small chested but I always wear one otherwise I feel naked and my boobs get cold (I feel colder, not in the people will stare at my chest way).

I usually wear a cardigan or other layer on top of a cami or t-shirt or else loose woven tops. I do wear a slightly padded sports bra if we are going out with others or if it is a “fancy” place! I burned my bra back in the 70’s and have been anti-bra for myself since then.

I haven’t found a cami pattern that I have in my head, but I think I kept one of my old ones that I loved so I will go look for it later. I can probably copy it.

I spent years trying to create a bra pattern that would actually fit correctly. I finally had success with one of Beverly Johnson’s Pin-Up Girls bra patterns. I altered the pattern to accommodate two different cup sizes and I made some comfortable, well fitting bras for the first time ever. I made them without underwires.

The only problem I had wearing them was that if I sweat (and I live in Arizona :cactus:) I would break out in a rash under the elastic band.

Nowadays I don’t wear those fitted bras. I just want a comfortable cotton sports style bra. The ones I am wearing are from an inexpensive chain store and the straps are too short. I have everything I need, though, including pattern blocks, to make some that fit well–if I ever get the time.

During the pandemic, I made bras out of the face mask pattern, just for fun.

I have bought a lot of bra making supplies from Sew Sassy Fabrics.

I actually grabbed one of the face masks I made to see if it fit my boob! ha ha I love that bra! Now I have ideas in my head!

That face mask bra is genius!

Reminded me of that scene in one of the how to train your dragon movies. Where Hiccup’s father said that their helmets used to be his mother’s breast armor.

Pro-tip: if you cut out your elastic to the size in the pattern and you can’t make it fit by pinning or clipping, don’t then proceed to try to “wing it” at the sewing machine and stitch the entire length only to find out that it wasn’t magically long enough. Unless, of course, you enjoy spending 30 minutes unpicking 3 point zigzag stitches. :woman_facepalming::roll_eyes:

I’m mostly impressed that I didn’t put a hole in my fabric while ripping out the stitches and I know why the elastic measurement was off. I think going forward I’ll just clip into place before cutting. This is why I shouldn’t sew when I’m hungry and just want to rush through things.

On the plus side, my sewing machine handles the micro-modal jersey wonderfully. Jersey needles are magical things.

I am going to be cutting out patterns from freezer paper and ironing them on the slippery fabrics after hearing how yours slipped. I don’t know why I never tried this with sewing but I remember it from printing fabrics and the fabric stuck well. I’ll have to double check and make sure there isn’t any residue to mess with sewing, but it never messed up my machine before.

Sewing undergarments uses way smaller pieces than sewing tops or pants!

@stirlingarts @AIMR ok, now I have to go dig out the huge bag of face masks in the TV cabinet. Curiosity is betting the better of me.

I sewed up my first pair (haven’t done the waistband yet) and tried them on and they’re super comfy! I get a little bit of drag marks here

I’m not sure if the waistband will solve that, if it’s something in how I sewed them, or just a body shape thing.

I did fold over elastic since that seamed the easiest and I’ll probably try something different for the next pair.

The gusset is also a bit wider than I’d like, so I’m interested if the other leg finishes will bring that in a little.

Oh and if you have one, the extension table helps a lot with the weight of the jersey not pulling on itself while sewing.

They do not sit flat at all :joy: (I think probably because I just sewed the elastic from the roll instead of measuring it and added extra length)

Lots of learning to do

How are you sewing the elastic on the legs? From the right side first or the wrong side?

The fold over elastic was on the bottom and the jersey on top, then I had the elastic on top to stitch it in place when folded.

I think less (shorter) elastic is probably going to make the difference you’re looking for.
