Upcycled Soda Can Fibonacci

@FiredGinkgo and I recently helped with a school auction project. The kids knew they wanted to do something recycled and with the Fibonacci spiral. We got to brainstorming and came across this awesome tutorial for an aluminum can wall hanging.

The kids collected hundreds of cans and hand-punched over 1,000 3/4" metal discs to create the โ€œseedsโ€ of the Fibonacci sunflower spiral. Then we attached all of them to a handmade frame. The finished piece is approximately 26" x 26". We installed a metal French cleat on the backside for hanging.

Punching day! :scissors: Two classrooms took turns punching the sheets from the cans.

Itโ€™s like metal confetti. So fun.

We made the pattern in Photoshop.

All printed and taped together.

We started the nail holes with an awl. Then we had to peel the pattern off the board, which made an interesting sound!

When we started, we were convinced weโ€™d make a second one for our house. After tapping over 1000 nails, weโ€™re still on the fence about thisโ€ฆ

It makes a lovely sound when wind or vibrations hit it. If itโ€™s near a fan, it sparkles. :sparkles:

Our (almost) 16-year old has been, too, so it ended up being fun for all of us. We went down really interesting some paths of research and discussion. :sunflower:

This is so unique and super neat! I love both the look and the sound it makes. I definitely think you should have one for your house, but yeah, hammering 1000+ pieces into place does sound pretty daunting!
