I wanted to try out overlay mosaic crochet and I found an alphabet someone had made, so I crocheted this wall hanging to remind myself to use the good stuff!
Pattern: Smaller Mosaic Alphabet (ravelry link)
Hook: I (5.5 mm)
Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala (Nifflers colorway), Bernat Baby Sport (Cloudburst colorway)
I used the alphabet pattern to plan out my words on graph paper and ending up needing 50 stitches for the longest word, including 1 stitch between letters and a 5 stitch border.
(you can kind of see my graph paper )
For overlay mosaic crochet, the pattern said to only work on the front side and fasten & cut the yarn after each row, but I didnโt want to do that. (Way too many ends! )
I saw a comment on reddit that said you could just work both colors from the front, then turn it, and then work both colors again from the back, etc. So I tried it and it worked perfectly! (I chained 2 between rows of the same color.)

To hang it, I crocheted chain loops using the gray yarn and cut down and sanded a dowel to insert through them. Then I braided strands of the gray yarn together to make a hanger for the wall, adding loops at the ends to put the dowel through.
The fringe is made from 2 strands of gray and 1 strand of blue held together.
I was very glad to not have to weave in a bunch of ends! The back ended up looking pretty neat:
