Variations on a Theme: Gathered Skirt Trio

The last gathered skirt I made was so comfy, I decided to make a few more.

Each of my fabrics was a different width, different yardage. In order to make the most of what I had, I made each one differently. They all have pockets and elastic waistbands with three channels of 3/8” elastic, but the number of tiers varies.

The navy cotton double gauze skirt is a single tier, gathered into a waistband.

The cotton gingham flannel skirt is two tiers.

And, the red/white cotton/linen skirt is three.

Here are my fabric totals and cutting layouts. I did have a decent amount of the linen/cotton fabric left over, but only scraps of the other two fabrics (and the pockets of the flannel skirt are a coordinating fabric because I used up all of the gingham flannel). I did just cut the navy fabric straight, without curving the hem or waist, and used a 2” hem.

Thank you so much!

Each of these seem so versatile! It’s so cool that you have the skills to modify the construction to accommodate your materials!

They look great and comfy, and adding the pockets make them amazing. I never thought of using three channels for the waistband. I love that idea!

Thank you, friends!

@Gozer - I made a couple dresses that used two channels of 3/4” elastic, and that was nice. But, I saw Rosery Apparel’s video on gathered skirts and used her waistband. It’s kind of like the waistband on sweatpants.

This makes me miss Joanns even more. I’d love to grab some flannel and try the three channel on a pair of cozy winter pj bottoms. I will have to see what I can find in my stash. Thanks for the idea!

The Michael’s here sells flannel! Maybe you could find some there if you have one!

@tendstowardschaos It’s great when you can modify a pattern to fit fabric you have. They all look different but all look comfy and versatile! I really like the red linen/cotton.

If you don’t mind shopping online, I can highly recommend fabricdepot dot com and Field’s Fabrics Etsy shop (they’re a local-to-me fabric store chain, but also have an Etsy).

I believe that is the Robert Kaufman Essex linen blend. I have bought it in 4 colors. :joy: It’s like a heavier, slightly rustic chambray.
