I made this paitning for my mom’s birthday. She loves ocean pictures, dragons, and all things blue so it’s the perfect match up. Though I made my dragon green rather than blue for better contrast. I’m pretty sure she’ll forgive me.
5x7 on Arches Coldpress paper with watercolor and gouache. Finished painting is sealed with UV-resistant acrylic spray.
I love the kid’s picture book feel of the piece! The dragon is 100% watercolor. The waves and sky are a mix of watercolor and gouache. I tried sooooooo hard to do the waves with watercolor and just adding white froth with gouache, but I wasn’t happy with how it was turning out so the waves are 99% gouache.
It’s really beautiful my friend. And as someone neck-deep in picture books in this season of my life, I would be all over the water dragon story if you ever wrote it!
Thank you both! Maybe one day soon when I pick up my pen again. My hands have been too busy with paintbrushes for the last year. I do adore a good children’s book though!
