What Would Kurt Vonnegut Do?

I got into Kurt Vonnegut via an old flame of mine. His books really changed my life in the most positive ways. I felt seen. I’ve drawn him a few times before but I really wanted to do one in black and grey. I decided to do the buttons in color because I felt their impact would be lost in greyscale. Lonesome No More! pin comes from his book, Slapstick. I added the smiley face one due to his love of comedy. 11x15. Watercolor.

Bonus shots!! Incld a photo of Kurt, too.

This is really great. I’ve not yet read any Vonnegut, but he’s on my list, where do you recommend that I start?

Fantastic! I am also a huge Vonnegut fan…not just his books, but also his entire life. He definitely led a unique and colorful life! He had a lot of views and beliefs that aligned with mine when I read him in college.

I love how you captured his gruffiness.

My favorite book was Welcome to the Monkey House, with Cat’s Cradle coming in second. I still have my copies from college!

It’s fantastic! I have been collecting quotes for my crocheted fortune cookie project and his are some of the best!

“No good at life, but very funny sometimes with the commentary.”

The first book I read of his was Sirens of Titan. There’s a piece of writing in it about some creatures called Harmoniums that made me completely fall in love with his writing. My favorite is Bluebeard which is really about what it’s like being an artist. Cat’s Cradle is also really good. I’ve read most of his books, they’re all delightful.

Yeah, tough to pick just one…I also think all of them were good, but Slaughterhouse Five was a bit depressing to me only because I knew he was a POW so it was too much reality (my dad was also in WWII and it affected him in a lot of ways).

Reading Breakfast of Champions a second time after learning I was bipolar and had my first psychotic break made me appreciate it a lot more. I finally understood what the characters were going through. I gave my brother that book last Christmas and Slaughterhouse Five the year before. It was nice getting his feedback on both and being able to share my favorite author with him.

Love this! I was just thinking about him, like, last week. Maybe I heard or read an old interview or something? Most of our books are packed away while I do my Big Bookcase Project, but I had committed to finding one to read when I unpack. I don’t remember all the ones I’ve read, but I know it’s not nearly all. TheMisterT probably has at least a few that I don’t in those boxes.

There’s a few I haven’t read yet. Rn I’m reading A Man Without A Country, a book given to me by that very old flame the day we met in person. Also. Best first date ever!!! We’re still close friends. Here’s us. He drove from Las Vegas to Palm Springs to go to this dance with me. The date was one movies are made around.

What an adorable picture! I knew I was going to marry my now husband because of his book and record collections. We spent many dates discussing books and music. Awwww…nice that you guys remained friends!

This piece carries so much personality and warmth — the choice to highlight the buttons in color was perfect. It’s a lovely tribute, and you can feel how meaningful his work is to you. “Lonesome No More!” is such a powerful message, and you captured it beautifully.

I am so impressed by your ability to do this in black and white - very neat! The little pops of color are definitely a fun touch!

I just used black paint and water to get all the tones. When I took a watercolor class we did a couple black and grey pieces and I really loved the exercise.

This is fantastic! And I agree with everyone else that the subject is also a great choice. I don’t think I can pick a favorite book, as we are also big fans of Vonnegut in this house!
