I wanted a shelf in my front window for putting some succulents on. The challenge is that the walls are adobe (so, softer than red brick) and the window isn’t framed with wood or anything. So, it’s difficult to mount anything. My solution is to cut the shelf just a tiny bit longer than needed and pound it into place. I have done this previously with this window, installing a piece of wood at the top in order to attach blinds.

More about the process:
I found a piece of wood that a neighbor had given me. It had formerly served as a bed slat. I painted it the same color as the walls of the room. Then I measured and cut it a tiny bit longer than the space. (By “a tiny bit, I mean approximately a saw blade’s width.)
I installed it, using the level for accuracy, by pounding it in as described above.
Then I added some non-skid shelf liner.
Voilà!
