I haunt Ruth Wilshaw’s YouTube channel and yesterday she posted a live paint-along for this gorgeous winter snowglobe. I couldn’t say no.
HIMI gouache on 6x6 aquaboard. I need to seal the painting still but I’m utterly in love. I may actually keep this one. The aquaboard is lovely to work on and I like the solid base.
I’m going to have to look up aquaboard and find out what it is, I’ve never heard of it.
You should definitely keep this piece, it came out beautiful! I love the subtlety of the background against the foreground. I also really like the background behind the globe and the differing shades of blue, they provide a really nice night sky effect. And speaking of nice effects, I love the way the tree trunk and branches are lit up by the lamp!
Aquaboard is a flat wooden panel coated with a thin layer of clay and medium that makes it act similar to watercolor paper. They can be a bit pricey so this is the first time I’ve worked with it and it has a texture similar to rough watercolor paper. That texture became more pronounced after I sealed the painting but it’s not unpleasant. Though I think I prefer a completely flat texture for gouache, tbh.
Thank you for the compliments! I really, really love this piece.
