Yarn math word problem

Hi all,

I’m trying to math out some yarn needs for a blanket border and have no idea what I’m doing. Here’s my word problem:

If a 13" x 17" project needs 60 yards of each (3) colors then a 72" x 72" project would need X yards per color.

Any mathy friends here who could offer some guidance?

I think you may need 1 yard per inch of the blankets diameter for each color. So maybe 288 yards of each color for the 72" x 72".

Assuming all colors are used an equal amount in a non-changing ratio, I think you can do something like this.

  bigger area / smaller area * original yards per color
  ((72 * 72) / (13 * 17)) * 60 = 1407.42

So I’d say somewhere around 1400-1500 yards of each of 3 colors.

ETA - whoops! I was doing the calculations for the whole blanket. I agree with @audity above, I think the ratio is 1:1 for each inch in the border.

((13 + 17) * 2)x = 60 -> 60x = 60 -> 1:1 ratio
