I just really didn’t consider people might want to swap something else for socks! I had hoped to find a few more knitters outside of the sockalong, but knitters vs. sewists sounds great as well.
I have no idea exactly how many hours it would take to knit a pair of socks though, and I have no idea what kind of sewn item is comparable. I’m a fast knitter and a slow sewist.
ETA: I changed the title so hopefully more people find this thread.
I would happily knit a pair of socks for a non-yarnie in exchange for something sewn.

I am about the same with knitting, crochet or sewing…medium fast…I like all three so I would enjoy this swap no matter what!
Yeah, yarnies would include crochet, which a lot of people do…I love crochet but I am not good at making those cute amis…I would sew or knit for a crochet ami!
The one thing that just crossed my mind is, partnering could be difficult for this swap. First, you’ll need an equal amount of yarnies / sewists, or find people who are multi-skilled and willing to do either one. I’m pretty sure enough people are multi-skilled that we’d find a way to make that work.
Next, do we also want to match people based on what they want to make vs. what they want to receive? For example, I’d probably participate as yarnie, but right now I’m mostly interested in knitting socks or gloves, not blankets, for example. I’m open to receiving many things. A sewist may be interested in receiving a crocheted item because they can knit but not crochet, and a third person may just want to receive a specific thing and doesn’t care whether it’s knitted or crocheted.
I have organized a few swaps in the old place, but those were all really simple swaps with just a few participants and very easy to partner.

How about an ongoing exchange? But I guess that’s like the OWS… hmm, I was thinking like when you’re wanting something you post:
Hi, I’m magpie & I’d like a hat with a turtle on it (pattern link) & I’m willing to sew a (what’s a hat worth?) Buttercup purse (?) in exchange.
Or, I’d like to make (this pattern I want to try but don’t want the finished item for myself), would anybody like it in exchange for a ______?
That would make partnering a lot easier, but that is quite similar to the OWS. The Ongoing-swaps usually have a pretty short time from claim to send-out. We started out with socks, I think a lot of people wouldn’t be able to finish a pair of socks in two weeks. That’s one of the reasons I don’t usually join those type of swaps.
Let me think if I can come up with something clever.
I think yarnies vs. sewists could work with that longer timeframe. I’m a slow knitter usually, so the two weeks OWS turnaround doesn’t usually work for me for knits (unless I’ve got something already made).
If we asked people to list at least three things they’d like to make and three things they’d like to receive, I think the partnering would be doable. There will be a few people who could be either yarnie or sewist, and flexible about what they make (I would be happy to help).
So far, we have 7 votes - 6 yarnies and a sewist. And it looks like people are leaning towards starting in September.
I will start the swap in September and we’ll see who signs up then, but I think we could end up with mostly yarnies. So yarnies would have to swap with yarnies or some multi-skilled people would have to switch to sewing instead. I wouldn’t mind swapping with a yarnie either, that was my original idea anyway.
