Here is the original. I caused a lot of damage when I removed the old embroidery. Problem solving the gaping holes caused a lot of frustration. I had a mental block from the very beginning.
I was venting my frustrations to my friend, Kelly. Kelly said, “Well, you can’t make a vest any uglier.” She meant it as a joke, but that attitude was so freeing. I just went with the flow, even when I didn’t love what was happening.
This little bit of stitching is the only thing I love. My eight year old niece wanted to help. Guiding her was a sweet bonding moment. She made huge stitches, so I anchored them with small, perpendicular stitches to prevent snags.
Girl, you are so talented. Your stitchery is some wild kind of personal magic for real. I recently moved to another spot those little squares of yours I framed & I must have held them in my hand for 5 solid minutes just peering in at them in wonder. You. Are. Incredible.
HOw you managed to make something so cool and so detailed while hating it the whole time, I will never understand! It’s not a style for everyone, but it sure sounds like its the style for you mom and that’s amazing.
How can you hate it?! It’s amazing and gorgeous wearable art!

I would also wear it everywhere just so I could have time looking at all of the fabrics and stitching anytime I had a wait or moment to sit! So many cool colors and textures…loads of free stitching…I can see why your mom loves it, but I will just blame momentary lapse of fatigue to why you don’t…get some rest and then look at it again…ha ha.
This is mind blowingly awesome!! I love that your friend’s sentiment helped you get past your creative block. The finished piece is exquisite! I could get lost in the details all day.
This screams eccentric art teacher to me! I love the pops of color and creative stitching. It looks to me like the threads just floated their way onto the fabric and landed exactly where they wanted.
Gorgeous!
Friends, you are so incredibly kind! I was so hyperfocused on the disappointments in this project. Thank you for helping me see it in a more positive way. You all are the best.
