2025 DeStash-Along

Thanks so much! I have to admit that it was pure chance that I used this pattern with a solid color. I am going to make a note on my hard copy, though, that a variegated doesn’t show off the pattern well.

Ooops…I did the crochet version, which turned out too large as well, hence the folded brim! But, it still twists but they are not as clear…I will definitely try the knit version to destash some yarn, but it seems all I have in my stash are variegated…I don’t have a lot of acrylic yarn anymore…I am trying to destash sock/fingering yarn now!

Ooh, but the colors ! And all the pieces look so snuggly. I have LOTS of acrylic because I received “cast offs” from 2 different people who were reducing their holdings. I just couldn’t pass them up since that is what I use primarily for my charity hats.

OH, dear! These are delightful! I am a real sucker for a granny square!

First completions for May prompt: Orange crochet scrubby washcloths. 5 altogether; used up solid orange and variegated, 310 grams / 286.9 yards. Yay!

2nd May finish: Variegated orange with white hats for my charity stash.

The hat with the white body and orange brim is this pattern
Free Easy Red Heart Family Hats Knitting Pattern | Yarnspirations. It’s an easy pattern that is great for using leftovers from your yarn stash. I used 69 grams for this one.

The multicolored hat contains the same two yarns, but in a color work pattern. Probably would have been a better result if both colors had been solid. Here is the pattern

For this one, I used 95 grams. Only 4 grams of the variegated one left. That will get added to a scrappy project later on.

I love the bright hats!

Thanks. This is more of the yarn passed on to me from my MIL. Her social calendar is so full at the independent living community that she hardly has time to do any crafts. She unloaded a ton of yarn.

I made my cat a party hat for her 1st birthday (which she would have none of) and then used some of the scraps for this little palm sized book

Aww, looks like she had fun playing with it even though she didn’t want to wear it

The last of my May orange theme items. I have had them done for a couple of weeks, but was waiting to post until I washed them and wove in the loose ends.

Three more washcloths. I am disappointed that something else in the wash load bled onto them and now they look dirty. I washed them a second time, but not much improvement (sigh). I used up 62 grams/195 yards from stash:

And two more hats in orange. Used 170 grams / 370 yards from stash.
The pattern (if you want to try it) is Free Easy Caron Textured Hat Knitting Pattern | Yarnspirations .
I found it to be a bit challenging to understand the directions as written, especially since I was converting it to knitting in the round. I ended up charting and swatching to make it more clear:

Two hats completed.

I already have one item completed for June. My rainbow yarn washcloth to go in my charity bag of washcloths. Used the final 27 grams / 49 yards of this yarn in my stash:

Your projects are all so nice!! And you complete so many things, I’m sure the charity you donate them to is really happy with such a productive volunteer.

I hope to be more productive over the next couple of months, summer usually is a more productive period for me. I love this month’s prompts! I’d been doing pretty well with crafting from stash but I recently ehm, expanded my stash significantly. But at least I have plans for most of it (summer clothes) so if I finish them quickly they don’t count as stash right? (there’s this thing called girl math… well, this is craft math I’m afraid!)

I added a CHUNK to my paper stash while visiting family and friends in Oregon last week. One friend was purging her printed cardstock selection and offered me first dibs. Since JoAnn is no longer, it seemed irresponsible not to stock up while I had a chance! :grimacing: Right?

Anyway… I have already used two different prints on a project! And while I did not go buck wild at JoAnn during the months-long clearance sale, I did do some stocking up for specific projects as well as stash… I’m very bummed and a little stressed about losing that supplies resource, but I am also rather excited about the challenge of working almost exclusively from stash for a few years.

Well, in your case, you do actually do a lot of papercraft! So it would certainly be irresponsible not to stock up on (free) stash. Plus you’re doing your friend a favour.

I do think having stash itself is not the issue, it’s having too much of it (and “too much” depends on personal circumstances). In your case, you are far away from craft stores, or any stores, I think, so it makes sense to keep a bit more stash on hand than would make sense for other people, especially your most-used supplies like cardstock.

I agree about stash. It can be important for creativity and creating. I think having to shop my own stash for paper and fabric projects will also expand my creativity by “forcing” me to perhaps try something other than what I might’ve initially thought, like a color or print.

I read that Michael’s bought several JoAnn brands and has already started expanding their fabric and yarn selections in many stores. From where I sit, it seems like Missoula would be a good market for them to expand the fabric, at least. That said, I forget that we already have a Hobby Lobby, so maybe they would not choose to expand. I just won’t shop at HL, so won’t be able to utilize their stock. I know there are others here that feel the same way, but maybe not enough for Michael’s to invest in expanding here.

Thanks so much. I don’t volunteer for a group anymore. We have a couple of senior/disabled apartment buildings in my neighborhood whose residents who are on government assistance. Every year in December, a couple of other neighbors arrange a “shoebox” gift drive for those residents. People fill shoeboxes with practical items and snacks and then wrap them. Each resident gets a box at a party at their building. Local kids sing carols. I’m going to contribute my hats and washcloths to the items for the boxes.

I am sharing in an attempt to stay strong - both of my local craft/fiber reuse centers are having huge sales today, and I will not go to either. Time to craft is my bottleneck, not supplies. So I will use the time I would have spent shopping work on my current WIP instead.

The acknowledgment that it’s time and not stuff that poses a challenge was really smart. Choosing to take the time to make things over the endorphin rush of collecting new is commendable. I hope you have a really fun and rewarding making session!
