I try to think ahead because I know I will never get to projects in time for the appropriate season, so in the summer/fall I had pulled fabrics and patterns from my stash to make winter skirts, and ran some designs off cricut… And then did nothing with them. But it was zero degrees F last week and cold at work, and I found this 70s wrap skirt pattern when perusing vintage patterns to share with my aunt for ideas for ‘hippies’ for the ‘Hair’ musical the school where she works is putting on.
(My shirt is also one I had made, but didn’t give myself enough room in the bust apparently.)
I didn’t like how they did the ties in this little pamphlet/instructions style pattern; it didn’t make sense for an overlapping skirt, so I did it my own way. Also, I already had the chickens, so…
This is more color accurate photo. The fabric was hand-me-down, and was obviously stored where light hit the folded edge, because there were lighter streaks. I made that side the wrong side. When I put the chickens on, the heat press had flattened the fibers and I had to hold my breath throwing it in the wash. It’s hard to say if it’s actually wool, wool-blend, or poly pretending to be wool. But it fluffed back up and I hung it over my ironing board to dry and no shrinkage.
Ruffle is out of a lightweight faux silk (also from my stash).
Will I be wearing this to work tomorrow? Probably.
It’s adorable! Yay for warm skirts and chickens! (I am not leaving the house this week unless I have to, it’s supposed to get down to -11F in a few days.)
Omg I ADORE this! I love the chickens and the color and design. I love 70s clothes. It looks great on you too. I bet you’ll get a lot of compliments at work!
@tendstowardschaos@RagingSloth OMG I feel like I’ve gotten so soft. It used to be like -20F to -40F for a week plus in this region around this time of year. But now it gets close to zero and I just want to turn around as soon as I step out the door to go to work and crawl back into bed instead.
The North Country in New York (about ten miles from Canada). We don’t really get that deep freeze anymore (last five to ten years) but we randomly had -12 temps in December. And this winter feels more like we used to get, so I’m wondering if we’ll get some -20. It was usually end of January/Beginning of February.
Oh yes we also got the unusual -12 temps in December! Makes sense that it’s upper New York. 10 miles away from Canada in MN ends up around the same. The pictures of cars covered in a foot of ice up there freak me out. I don’t go up north during the winter lol.
