Alvin Proof Drawstring Bag for Yarn Projects

After seeing the cute Christmas Project Bag by @manders, I knew this would be the perfect bag for my knitting and crochet projects.

My little cat Alvin loves to eat thread and yarn, which is not good, so I am always having to hide or put away my projects to keep him safe.

This bag is perfect!

I used some Alexander Henry fabric that has been in my stash forever. I then found a wave fabric but didn’t have enough for the lining, so I used a third fabric, a batik.

Here are some close-up shots:

I did watch the video link that @manders posted because I tend to just make things harder on myself by trying to figure things out. The instructor was clear, concise and quick. I plan on making at least three more since I have yarn coming soon for my 2026 projects!

Oh, and it is cute as well as functional!

Beautiful stitching my friend!

Gorgeous bag and fabric! You whipped that up so quick!

I can’t believe you made it already! Lol I love the fabric choices you chose!

Any advice on doing that final top stitch? **You did a gorgeous job on it. :purple_heart:

Do you have a machine with a removeable base that turns into a sleeve base? I can sew in a circle with mine The other thing if you don’t have that feature is that you can turn it inside out and sew in a circle. I also pressed the heck out of it so that all the seams pointed downwards.

It is tough because I was sewing through 2 layers of fusible fleece, 2 layers of drawstring, lining and outer fabric. 8 layers in all! That is a lot of layers! I don’t think it is really that necessary, though. I also did not make that bottom support piece. Yarn isn’t that heavy.

This bag is so. good. The fabrics you chose… so nice looking. And it seems (seams?) like it’s going to do the trick from protecting your projects from Alvin and Alvin from himself.

I was working on a second one last night but stopped to make dinner. I forgot to take the thread off my machine. When I returned, there was a huge glob of thread that he apparently chewed off and threw up (thank goodness!), but half the spool was all over my room, down the hall, into the bedroom and baths…it was a mess! He is such a sneaky imp so I do have to do more to protect him from himself!

What I need to make is a weighted sewing machine cover…one that is easy to slip on but will be difficult for him to take off!

I had a typo in there that I have since fixed.

Yea it’s a lot of layers. I do have a machine where I can take part of it off to sew a circle. I think the top stitch isn’t necessary too, but it looks nice.

I finished my second bag. I made this one about three inches larger to hold bulky yarn that is coming any day now. I also added a pocket to the front to hold hooks or needles and maybe notes. I have a hidden snap on the pocket to close it because…well, Alvin.

The fabric for the body of the bag is some vintage heavy cotton. The drawstring fabric is a modern print. The lining is some ugly green that might have been a sheet at some point. Not sure, but no one is going to see it except the yarn.

I will probably have bag #3 done before the yarn gets here later in the week!

Wow, you’re so fast! :open_mouth: It looks great!

But I must know…what does the inside fabric look like? :eyes:

It doesn’t even blend nicely but I didn’t have any other fabric I wanted to use as lining. In the dark, it works fine!

Just say it’s an eccentric design choice :winking_face_with_tongue:
