Another Flashcard in a Decoupaged Frame - Sewing Theme

I can hardly say no to a vintage flashcard with imagery that appeals to me. So, I said yes to this “thread” card not too long ago, committing myself to framing it up for my craft space.

But first I had to thrift a frame. I knew this one was too big, but it was solid wood, in good condition, and only $2. Good enough! At first, I thought I would spray paint it to get it done quickly, but none of my on-hand colors felt right and I didn’t want to add another can to my stash, so I decided to see if I had something in my stash of paper napkins to do that with. Nope. Maybe in the tissue paper tote? YES! Sewing pattern tissue would be perfect!

With just a few pieces that had already been cut out and used by someone, I was able to enough mostly-plain parts to do a base layer and fun detail parts for the top layer. I did the backing board as a “mat” of sorts and the frame using matte Mod Podge. Then I mixed some red craft paint into some Mod Podge to give the “mat” some oomph behind the card.

I decided that instead of the wall with the little gallery that has my Make something funny piece, I wanted it tucked behind the stuff displayed on the top of my Expedit shelf unit. As you move about the room it is more or less visible and not so hidden as it seems in this photo.

This is the back of the card. It has the publication year of 1971 and refers to this as a “Peabody Articulation Card”… fancy.

Other than the frame, which I bought just last week, everything else is stash. YEY!

ADDENDUM: I forgot to mention that I tried the trick of spraying dried Mod Podge with spray sealer to remove the stickiness on the frame (not the background) and it seemed to work. Time (and dust) will tell.

Creative frame! The touch of red on the background really pulls it together.

Aw, thanks so much, you two! I am so glad that I had saved some pattern tissue for something.

The frame is awesome. i love the look of the pattern on it.
Did you hear they are going to stop tissue paper patterns? I am not sure if that is 100% true, but its what I heard.

Thank! I know that the last printer in the US (maybe in North America) was shut down when the Big 4 (McCall’s, Simplicity, Vogue, Butterick - maybe I’m missing one+) were sold a couple years ago. This had a huge effect on a lot of indie pattern makers, because that same printer printed theirs, too! I think they also did large format pattern printing on non-tissue, too.
