Boot embroidery/appliqué help

Hello! I’m currently working on a project and I’m having a hard time figuring out if I can save this or start over.

I’m trying to hand embroider a boot, more specifically a platform “goth” boot

This is the reference I drew up and I really like everything (minus the lace at the top!)

what do I should to do to get the dimensions to look better?

This is what I have so far. I kind of planned on doing just a simple stitch around

This is what I’ve planned to fix already, I’m not too worried about the laces, I just want it to look like a boot for now!

Any advice? Should I just embroider the whole thing as is (with my mistakes fixed) should I scrap it? Is there something I’m not seeing!

I don’t really know what I’m asking for other than it to look more like the reference I drew!
Thank you!

Are you free handing the embroidery on top of the boot template?

I like to use tissue paper to do embroidery. I recommend tracing your initial pattern onto the tissue paper, pinning it to your embroidery hoops and embroidering over it. (When you’re done you need to carefully remove the tissue paper.) Doing this will allow the dimensions to match your original image.

I would also recommend using smaller stitches. You can use a simple backstitch for the whole project, but you need to be mindful where you want the lines to curve, since longer lines will not look curvy.

I’m not a pro, but this is how I would go about it. Hopefully more lettuce heads will chime in!

The tissue paper actually might be the way to go!! Thank you!

I did think about using smaller stitches, but I didn’t think it would stand out as much just doing the one color; however I do see the smaller stitches working if I try the tissue paper method!

I think I might give the tissue paper a whirl on some scrap fabric, figure out if I should start over or keep pushing with the design I have on my hoop now

Your drawing is excellent, so I agree that you should use it as your template right on your fabric and stitch through it.

Smaller stitches will definitely help define the shape. You should also put in the eyelets to enhance the laces.

I like the juxtaposition of a dark goth boot with the delicate floral background!

Yes! Eyelets would help it go so far!

I think I am going to scrap this one and try again using my design as a template and not trying to eyeball the design directly on!

And thank you for noticing my use of fabrics! I find myself in a constant state of “whimsy and goth” and the best way to find clothes for my style is to make them!

Something I do with lighter fabrics sometimes is tape my drawing to a window with good sunlight and then tape the fabric over that and trace the design with a soft leaded pencil (4b or softer) directly onto the fabric. Works great if you don’t have an appliqué involved, like your boot. It’s a low budget light box. I have an actual light box now but I’ve been doing the window trick since jr high. You’re doing great, I just wanted to give you another trick besides the tissue paper for future projects. I love this project, looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
