rT’s Aunt and her partner when we were on a family vacation in Hawaii earlier this year. So when I was planning these sardine cat toys, I got the idea to make a Spam toy for their cat, Butters.
I found the image of the label online and printed it on the ink-jet printable cotton as the sardines. It’s backed with a grey cotton from my stash.
The top of the “can” opens to reveal two slices of Spam! Pink calico from stash. All 3 pieces have cotton batting, cat nip, and crinkly plastic.
My original plans for construction were a little more complex and would have yielded a more satisfying outcome, but I didn’t have the time or the mental clarity to follow them because, puppy. But I think it’s still hilarious and that they’ll get a kick out of it.

I really dislike Spam to eat, but sure think it is a fun theme to make some pretty silly things!
Love this! I am sure it will bring some hilarity!
I still have my Spam projects from one of the Mod April Fool’s fun…including a Spam Can purse.
I felt like it was important to eat Spam in Hawaii, but otherwise it’s not really for me. Once in a while in something is fine, but soooo salty. That said, I don’t really go for ham, either.
this is hilarious. We ate Spam growing up. Or rather the poor person version - Treet. Which until just now when I looked it up I didn’t realize was Treet instead of Treat.
Thanks! When looking for the Spam label, I’m pretty sure I came upon Treet! I’m not sure it was available where I was, because surely I would’ve seen in on the shelves.
Oh my gosh this is HILARIOUS! It will be a hit for sure!
Side note: comedian Bill Engvall says that SPAM stands for “Stuff Posing As Meat.”
That phrase pops into my head anytime I see Spam now.
(You’re welcome! )

Almost as bad as “Spoiled Pig As* Mush”…to be fair, SPAM was one of the few “meats” that the military commissary had when we were overseas. My dad was the master of disguise and made some very interesting and tasty dishes with it. I sometimes get nostalgic over spam casserole or spam and eggs…
I just love that it is an icon in our culture that many can relate to in one way or another…the younger generation seems to know it for spam sushi! I can’t even…
TheMisterT likes to say, “Spam, now with less pig anus,” so there is no shortage of Spam jokes. I think a lot of its bad reputation comes from it being one of the few types of meat protein available in lean times for several groups of people, and not just Americans. SO not only is it a reminder of scarcity, but it got used so much that it was just too much for people.
