Cardboard+Paint+Glue=King Night

I got the VIP package for the Mastering Mixed Media 2026. There were way too many lessons for me to get done in two weeks. Last year, I did a session with artist Eulalia Mejia and really enjoyed it so I did the one she presented this year as well. They are just fun with no expectation of perfection, needing the exact supplies, etc.

This little owl is cut out from cardboard. Painted and then glued onto any kind of surface. I happened to have one of those canvas boards in my stash. I rarely use them because they tend to warp, but for this project, it was fine.

I used cheap paint markers for the details and also some pencils.

Only one problem: I now have a stack of cardboard in the garage to add to my stash!

Her class was my favorite. Your King Night looks so wonderful!

Thanks! Really not my style, but I have a three year old niece that needs things to hang in her new big girl bedroom! The artist has another similar class in the VIP but with a different animal so I will probably make it a pair if I can find another canvas board in the same size.

Its so great. I love the tone and the way it hangs over the border. All the tiny designs are cool.

Oh, I love this! A friend of mine took this class, too, and I’ve been encouraging nagging her to post her Night King here. It’s so cool to see your take vs hers vs the sample.

So vibrant and fun! Love it!

It’s always interesting to me how no two pieces can ever be exactly alike because of supplies and the different imaginations. Learning something new and then incorporating it with other projects helps keeps things from getting boring as well.

Yes, your friend should post her piece!

And, I need to correct the title…it is King Night…lol.

Your owl looks amazing! Great work. And it will be perfect for a 3-year old’s bedroom. It looks like an illustration out of a picture book. There are so many stories you could make up about this guy and and his crown.

That’s a great King Night! Very vibrant.
I watched her class too, as well as a class she had in Sketchbook Revival. I enjoy her teaching style.

Yes, I also think she is funny and love it when she throws in some random comment that makes me laugh. Her style is very playful. It really isn’t my style, but I like to play and make lots of things just because…I get a lot of enjoyment from her tutorials.

I love your King NIght so much! I too did this class - it was fun and so free spirited, I loved making something out of cardboard like this, that was a first for me and I enjoyed it so much! I need to take a few snaps and post them.

Using found materials was what drew me to this class. She has another class in the VIP that also uses cardboard…it is a cat! Apparently, she is doing a lot of pieces with cardboard and collage. need some more sturdy background material to do more. I think the whole thing can be done with cardboard, so I am going to try!

And yes, you should post. Each one is so fun and unique, but the process was what I enjoyed the most. I got in the zone!

Ahhhh this is so wonderful!! Several months back, I also started painting on old carboard boxes, which means I’m even worse at throwing “trash” away now!

I wasn’t going to take the class but then I remembered the cool things you painted on cardboard. I am glad I did…I now have a huge pile in my garage that won’t be carried off to the recycling center for a while! You are an inspiration!

That owl is wonderful!

I’m really into mixed media at the moment, so I need to check out these classes.

Beautiful and elaborate design! So well-done! I like working with cardboard and am getting ready to use it more. I like your owl’s expression and tilt of his head. I also like the crescent moon.
