This is soo cool! I hope you share it when you’re done. I’m trying to envision it.
Kiddo just turned 14. I got him Weezer on vinyl, a CD he asked for (no clue who it is), Fight Club on DVD…is it 1995? ![]()

The one I saw was pretty ugly, looked a bit like wearing a sleeping bag. I’m sure you can do that a lot better. Might save on the heating bills as well! I used to have an ice cold attic room and I wore a knitted poncho all winter.
@Abbeeroad apparantly my coworker’s kids have been asking for cassette tapes?! Your kid has a great taste in music. I used to listen to Weezer a lot. My parents had a great record collection, so I started listening to bands like Led Zeppelin at a pretty young age, but they couldn’t stand all that new music - Nirvana, Hole, Weezer, Alice in Chains, No Doubt, Pearl Jam. Now all those bands are parent music ![]()
Yes! My FIL just bought an ‘85 Corvette. The main attraction for my son? The tape deck! And the automated headlights. I mean the shear number of nobs and dials and buttons was fun for me too. And it smelled like my childhood.
Yep. Loved all those bands you mentioned!!!
Hey–I still have cassette tapes and even an old Walkman! ![]()
Please don’t tell me the Snuggie is back…I swear I saw a chia head in the store the other day…
Haha, I don’t think I’ve got many surviving cassette tapes, but I’m pretty sure we’ve got several big plastic bins full of CDs, I should have a look through them.
That’s a really cute cross stitch @Immaculata! I love that style of festive winter designs for Christmas with the crisp colours and reindeer and snowy cottages etc., but snowy designs never look quite right for a Southern Hemisphere Christmas, sadly. That red and turquoise combo is lovely!
@AIMR The one I saw was a little bit different from a snuggie, it was called the Watatank gaming blanket.
@jemimah our Decembers are getting warmer and warmer, so we don’t usually have snow anymore, but at least there used to be snow, back in the old days. Celebrating Christmas in summer is quite a different story. Do you guys have your own alternative Christmas songs? I guess it would be odd to sing White Christmas or Let it snow.
I always like animals and cottages for decoration. I’ve got several robin ornaments in my tree, reindeer, rabbits. I’m pretty sure I stitched some red and turquoise on a brown fabric ornaments before, but I can’t really remember them. Maybe I gave them away?
It’s a real mix in New Zealand and Australia. There’s lots of traditional snowy winter-themed stuff in the shops, and Christmas songs, and people still sometimes eat traditional Christmas food, especially English things like Christmas puddings and roasts. But then there’s also a lot of local summer themed stuff available like Santa Clause in sunglasses and shorts, barbecues, etc. And there’s a few local Christmas carols and songs, like in NZ there’s a song A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree (a version of the 12 Days of Christmas), it’s pretty cute.
12 piupiu swinging,
11 haka lessons,
10 juicy fish heads,
9 sacks of pipi,
8 plants of puha,
7 eels a-swimming,
6 pois a-twirling,
5 big fat pigs,
4 huhu grubs,
3 flax kete,
2 kumara,
And a Pukeko in a Ponga tree.
23 weeks until December 1st!
It’s almost time for “Christmas in July” stuff. I am currently (procrastinating) mulling over who is “yarn worthy” and who would actually want/appreciate a hand made item. Lists will be made, and checked twice…
Yikes! I need to do the same thing or I will be scrambling!
I have three pairs of socks on my list already and haven’t even started!
I also have three aprons and a baby quilt–my latest great-niece is expected in December!
Ugh…same here! I need to narrow things down to a firm list and GET GOING! My daughter just gave me a great idea for my little nieces and I have several vintage calendar tea towels that will make nice pillows and totes.
(sneaks into her absolute favorite thread quietly)
My holiday craft list keeps getting smaller. This year, it’s just my husband and my kiddos (22 and 17). I haven’t the slightest what I’m making for them this year.
However, I have started on my kids’ ornaments for this year.
This went together super fast!
Oooh nice!! Very cheerful.
Love it!
I’m plotting ideas for my quite short recipients list, too. Doll clothes for my daughter is looking like a good possibility.
Super cute!
Doll clothes are always a good bet! What type of doll does she have? Are you making tiny clothes or bigger doll clothes?
She has 2 dolls that are 18” and I found a pattern book (knitting) at the library so I’m trying a couple of them out. She also has baby dolls of various sizes (so. many. babies) that I can play around with ideas for, too.
This isnt even all of them, this is just what her grandmothers gave her for birthday/Christmas. There’s at least 4 more bigger babies and one more 18” doll around here:
She’s holding court. Love it. And Molly!!!
Is the dress you are knitting for the American doll with the glasses? I see patterns and clothes for them at every festival and fair…must be a popular doll!
Yeah, the swatch I was doing the other night is for her size. I found a nook at the library. There are 2 different brands of 18” doll in the house and like 2 outfits so it’s not a terribly cluttery idea to make 2 or 3 new things to be able to play dress up. I tried telling the grandparents that accessories for her existing baby/dolls would be great gifts. Apparently they arent that fun to buy bc instead we got ALL THE OTHER DOLLS.
Ah well, it’s nice to be loved.
The American Girl dolls are like a whole lifestyle brand- they had/have a boutique with cafe for kids and the dolls to shop, pamper, and eat. Not being a subscriber to such excitements I’m not sure if that survives post pandemic.
