Christmas Craftalong

Nice! The yarn looks lovely, it will be such a good, practical gift. I don’t mean “oh that’s… practical” in an insulting way, more like, “hey, that’s something they’re actually going to use, not throw away the week after Christmas” . If you’re interested, pouring soap is not something that’s super complicated, I it’s something I think Kidlet might even be able to help with. I made soap for everyone for Covid Christmas nr. 1.

@AIMR are happy to have winter weather again? I’d miss the seasons if we didn’t have them.

I would be happy never to see snow again…but, since I really don’t have to go out into it anymore now that I don’t have to go into work, maybe it won’t be so bad and I can enjoy the beauty and not the hassle of snow.

That actually sounds great! Your husband makes sure there’s enough food in the house and you can just sit by the window with your stitching and watch the snow and the birds and the neighbours who need to go through it

We don’t get “real” snow here, just a few inches at most and it melts in 24 hours.

A little side story here…the person who will be doing our exterior remodeling is actually a township police officer. He and I have become fast friends since we have so much in common as far as family stuff. Well, he runs a snow removal business on the side and will be doing all the snow removal for us this winter! He has to do it for nearby doctors and clinics so he said he would do it for us as well while he is out.

I completely forgot to do the prize drawing!!!

But I did, and to probably no one’s surprise, @MightyMitochondria did in fact win Christmas in July! The odds of that were 57% but I did actually do a random generator to make it fair.

You will be receiving an Etsy giftcard and I’ll mail you a little something as well.

Everyone else, not just the people who finished items for Christmas in July, if I don’t have your address already, PM it to me if you want to be added to the Christmas cards list! No need to reciprocate, I just like sending cards and I’ve made plenty.

I’m still thinking of Christmas projects for 2024. I feel like Mr. Imma might need a new sweater / hoodie. I’ve given him handmade PJ pants and socks in the past and we like to take at least one day between Christmas and NYE eating leftovers in our PJs and watching Christmas movies. So a sweater would be a great addition. But he’s quite particular about them. He’s not going to want a handknitted one. I could sew one if I find the right fabric, but he’s also very particular about the feel of the fabric and the right style. So it would be easier to just get a basic hoodie from a brand he likes.

I’ve been thinking of asking an acquaintance who makes fun T-shirts for kids (she cuts and transfers iron-on vinyl) but she’s an acquaintance, not a friend - we have shared friends and we see each other as part as a group relatively frequently, but I don’t completely trust her, especially around money. I can’t really put a finger on why I feel that way but for now I haven’t asked her. Obviously as a fellow crafter I know the skills, time and supplies that go into any craft, so I’m certainly not expecting anyone to do it for free. I’m going to think about that idea a little bit longer until it’s three days before Christmas and I need to make a quick decision :joy:

My friend is a very talented seamstress and a really nice person and she had a super rough year. She spent a long time in hospital with a condition that’s sometimes fatal, but she’s doing well now and is almost recovered. There’s a cross stitch pattern of Patrick and Esme from the Great British Sewing Bee in a recent issue of Cross Stitcher and I’m thinking of stitching these and maybe incorporate it into something like a zip-around pouch for her supplies. She is a huge Sewing Bee fan. This might leave me with less time to make gifts for others, but honestly, I don’t care. She’s a friend, I’m so relieved she’s doing well, and she’s also a crafter who really appreciates handmade gifts.

These are all great ideas. For the Tshirt/sweatshirt idea what about approaching someone here that does that craft for a swap? If you felt confident you could iron on the design you could even just swap a flat envelope of the vinyl then buy the brand he likes and modify it with an image.

@Immaculata I also forgot! Thank you!:heart: I appreciate the craftalong to help me stay motivated through my to do list.

I agree wirh your comment about @AntBee 's practical gift. I appreciate practical gifts and try to make give mostly practical items, although you can’t tell from my recent projects.

I’m hoping blocking will tighten this up at thw “V” section, I thought it would be cute to use a heart shape for a wash cloth to make a little set but I had to modify a pattern for the yarn I was using and it’s a bit wonky:

It looks like a perfect heart! Cute idea! Love the diagonal pattern!

I finished all the sewing for my christmas gift bags. Of course I can’t find the rest of my ribbon to finish the ties, so I’ll have to pick some up next time I go to the store. :woman_facepalming:

Nice!! What kind of gifts are you making?

I know I want to make a plastic bag holder, a couple knit hats, a bowl holder sized for a pint of ice cream, and an ornament from a model kit. I haven’t decided what else I’m making yet.

I’m at a bit of a loss about what crafty gifts I might make other than the teacher/librarian ones I’m already procrastinating on. I like to make my kid stuff, but as we’re drowning in “stuff” right now and she’s about to have a birthday (6th!) I’m thinking a book on minimalism and an empty truck destined for a charity shop to fill. lol I kid, I kid… or do I?

Are there any charity gift drives etc in your area? You could gather some of the things she’s too old for now, and include some simple handmade gifts for a younger girl (like a hat or mittens or a dress for the doll you’re passing on). It would be a great opportunity for her to learn about the spirit of Christmas. As well as create space in your house of course.

Yeah, it’s hard to think of gifts! I’ve been trying to give more useful or consumable gifts in the last few years and keeping the decorative items to smaller things (unless they’re something I think the person will really like!).

Last year I gave several crochet bowls. I use them all over the house to collect things on tables & desks.

I’ve given most people at least one crochet basket. They’re fun to make!

My niece has received several bookmarks. I might make her a nicer version of one of the simple paper ones I sent her.

She is actually pretty good about passing things on. She knows we’re in a “Hand-me-down” chain so she sees her boxes coming in and knows to whom the go on to once she’s outgrown them. And the local playground has a little free library so she’s culled the herd into that box already at least once, so that’s great.

Our main “stuff challenge” is that she is the only grand daughter and the only grandchild under the age of 20. EVERYONE wants to give her all the fun things. (not a bad problem to have, so much love. )

So getting things out isn’t the issue, there’s just too much stuff coming in?? No solutions for that I’m afraid. If, against all expectations, we would suddenly get a niece or a nephew I would also spoil them terribly, I’m sure.

Usually when summer turns into fall, I cast on socks, but I’m not sure this year. I knitted 4 or 5 pairs of scrappy socks for myself last year to destash, and I typically gift my mum socks for Christmas but she’s got so many pairs now. I don’t want her to deal with excess stuff either. She wears them all the time but they’re too sturdy
