Chromaticity baby quilt

I like to make baby quilts when my close friends have babies, so I always keep my eyes open for suitable fabric, especially when it’s on sale. That’s how some time ago a few charm packs as well as yardage for backing from Robert Kaufman’s Chromaticity range had jumped into my stash. I hadn’t used them yet, because I’d noticed the whole range is very love it or hate it (and I love it). A lot of people I’m close to prefer more kid-friendly prints and colours. Then, last summer, I heard I was going to be an aunt and I knew the parents would love this fabric.

The pattern is based on a pattern in a 2018 German quilting magazine. I took the central “star” block from that pattern, but that quilt was done in red and white and it also had more intricate borders. This is a simplified version.

Whenever I do HST’s, I make sure to stitch each block twice, so the cut-offs are turned into extra HST’s. I stitched all of them into pinwheels, I picked four matching pinwheels for the corners, but I have so many of them.

Each block consists of two charm squares in each colours. This charm pack contained two squares of each colour, which means I still have one charm pack untouched and I only used up around half of the other one. I have almost a yard of the purple backing fabric left, and two yards of green. I will certainly use them up in a future scrap quilt, actually, probably more than one, with how much fabric is left over.

Thanks! @Tapestry sorry for the quilting lingo! HST = Half-square triangle. It’s a square made from two triangles. My entire block is built from HST’s. Sewing a triangle is actually not fun, as when you cut fabric on the diagonal (bias) it tends to stretch. So, instead I put together two squares, and drew a diagonal line on the back. I stitched on either side of that diagonal line, then cut through the diagonal line, so instead of leftover triangle bits, I had an extra HST square. You can make them equal sized or make a bigger and a smaller HST, which is what I did.

ETA: and what @MistressJennie did in Ada’s Bonus Wall Quilt . It’s a clever way to deal with scraps, HST’s are very versatile.

Thanks! I have so much fabric left over and I really love it, so lately I’ve been thinking I could make a matching single bed-sized quilt for my niece. I found a really nice picture on pinterest that would be perfect for this fabric. Since my niece’s age is still counted in weeks, that gives me plenty of crafting time. She might not grow up to like the colours or print and in that case I could claim it for me, which wouldn’t exactly be a bad thing either.

Turned out really nice! I love that the backing is just as pretty.

Sounds like you have a good plan for additional use of this fabric as well!

You did such a lovely job on this quilt! I really like the boldness of the purple border and I like that you matched the backing to that border.
I can easily see a baby doing tummy time on this quilt, later followed by her carrying it around everywhere as a toddler, and then later having picnic tea parties with her stuffed animals on the quilt. This is definitely a quilt that can be enjoyed for years to come!
