Craft Your Pins 2025 Craftalong

UGH–I am hating that pictures that were shared on the last site, even those in the private section, are showing up on Pinterest. I see pictures of my home, my pets, my friends. Of course, the link is back to that place that bought out C-ster so there is no info, but it is still annoying and alarming when they pop up.

The good news is that I am seeing projects I made years ago that I had forgotten about! That is pretty cool and I have been saving them on a separate board.

That’s creepy!!! Have you tried reporting them to Pinterest to get them removed?

I don’t think any of the pictures are of interest to anyone out there. You know what they say: Once on the internet, always on the internet. It’s mostly the pictures of my pets who have died since that get to me, but I can deal.

I had a run of those a while back & clicked the the button for “no, I think you’re wrong” on one that was an image of a fancy bathroom with nobody in it; a week or so later that did get restored. Pretty sure most of the violation notices are from periodic sweeps with digital matching filters, so they will turn up some false positives.

Pinterest seems to have a new ultra stuffy severely conservative agent of censorship. I am getting pins reported for “hateful content.” They are actually just not super gender stereotyped. I just can’t fathom them as hateful. Most of the time the report says they deleted it so I can’t even see what it was to challenge it. I am now just letting it go.

AI is kinda taking over Pinterest anyway. I am now getting “Gulter” free recipes instead of gluten-free, among the carefully crafted, impossible AI women… But, I still can’t bring myself to give it up completely yet.

I have had pins reviewed and they brought them back. What I HATE is that I have to download something to see what the actual pins are.

I learned recently that you can change the AI settings on your account and I did so. I feel like I am getting more content I care about since.

Oh, good call– I hadn’t been through my pinterest settings in ages.

If anyone else is interested, it looks like you can turn off AI recommendations (tho apparently you have to untick every topic individually) and also there’s a ticky box under privacy to opt out of your pins being used to train their AI.

Thanks for the reminder! I updated mine as well.

Can I ask you all about how you use Pins for crafting? Like, do most of you pin things that you want to do “exactly”? I have ginormous Pinboards (and sub-boards), because I am mostly pinning for more general inspiration - just one or a few things about this one and the color of that one, etc. I suppose it’s somewhere between these two when it’s a pinned pattern - it’s rare that a person makes a pattern with the exact materials used in the example.

I use Pinterest in a few ways.

I pin things in general that I like. It doesn’t mean I will make it. I might like the colors or the shape. General ideas and inspiration.

I then pin things that seem useful to make like pouches, bags, etc. I like making these things but need new ideas. Sometimes the pins have a specific pattern or shape that I will try. Of course, my fabrics will be different, but I am using the exact pattern. This goes for yarn items as well.

I don’t think I have ever been able to do anything “exactly”. Different materials and supplies or I need to change a name, phrase, etc.

I also use Pinterest to track things I have made just because I sometimes forget that I made it already or that I have the pattern already.

I made this from a Pinterest post. It was a random pin for something small to give to my brother for Christmas. It is pretty close to the original, but changed to fit what I had and my own shape.

I guess it’s more or less the same for me.

I have boards that I used mainly when we were making decisions about the house (bathroom, kitchen, etc). Those were more for general inspiration - I like this kind of tile, this kind of layout, this colour scheme.

I have boards for knitting and crochet where I pin things that I am interested in making in future, probably not a 100% exact copy but I might want to use that crochet diagram or that sock pattern using my own choice of yarn. For quilting, I pin block designs / layouts / colour schemes that appeal to me, but I don’t think I’ve ever made an exact copy. My quilts are often relatively spontaneous designs, most of the times I don’t use a pattern.

For sewing, I’ve pinned tutorials for things like unusually shaped pouches and bags that I’ve followed exactly-ish (used the pattern but picked my own materials) and I also sometimes pin “tips and tricks”. Whenever I pin clothes, it’s just for inspiration. I don’t buy ready-made patterns but I might draft a similar pattern.

Now I think of it, I’m actually working on a pinterest-inspired pinafore dress right now. I pinned this: https://nl.pinterest.com/pin/413838653279748508/ and I’ve drafted a very similar pattern (with a zipper and without the buttons on the shoulder) to use up some baby blue corduroy I have. It’s very different from what I would normally wear, or make, but I have little experience with princess seams and it seemed like a fun experiment.

That’s really cute! I just failed at trying to make a simple cotton/linen top. I didn’t have enough fabric for sleeves so I was going to turn it into a vest with side ties. But when I tried it on, the brownish color just looked awful on me and the fabric was too thin to lay nicely over a knit t-shirt I wanted to wear.

I just remembered that I bought several yards of nice knit interfacing. It is very lightweight but it might be just enough to give the fabric a bit more drape. I was planning to use colorful embroidery at the neckline so that would help with the drab color…hmmm…maybe I will get it back out before starting over with another fabric!

There’s always fabric dye as a last resort!

I’m going to look through my stash to see if I have anything I can use for sleeves. I am going to experiment with some dye I have on hand. Great idea! I didn’t even think of dyeing!

I dyed the fabric with indigo dye! It is more denim colored so it will be much more flattering on me! Thanks for the suggestion!

I like how that turned out.

Yes, I look better in blues than browns. I’ll have to pick different colored embroidery threads now, but the design will be the same.

Yes, it’s an experiment that worked out well! You’d never guess you didn’t buy the fabric like that.
