Crochet Ribbed Beanie (with pattern)

I came across the pattern* for this hat online, and the construction method was intriguing. It starts with a chain, and the first row works just part of the chain. Every other row works two additional stitches to create a shape that is tapered at one end.

The last row acts as the base row for the next section, for a total of 6 sections. Then, it’s seamed together. Once I did the first section, I didn’t even need the pattern, and once I did my first row in a section, I didn’t even need to count my stitches.

Overall, it was a pretty easy hat to make! The next time I make one, I’ll make sure to use a slightly larger hook for my starting chain so it isn’t as tight.

*The link on the pattern is no longer active and, on Ravelry, it says that the blog has been taken down. I tried to find a pattern that was the same, and while I could find something similar, the method was different.

If anyone is interested in the pattern, I can type it out. Or, if anyone knows of a pattern I can link to (besides an image on Pinterest), I can add the link.

Here’s the pattern! I typed it out exactly as it was written. Let me know if you have any questions!

Originally posted on: http://www.polinakuts.com. The website no longer exists, so I have duplicated the pattern here.

Part #1:

Row 0: 45 chains + 1 lift ch (and don’t forget it in the end of each row) (45)

Row 1: 33 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (35)

Only in row #1 all single crochets are crocheted in row #0

Row 2: 35 sc blo (35)

Row 3: 35 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (37)

Row 4: 37 sc blo (37)

Row 5: 37 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (39)

Row 6: 39 sc blo (39)

Row 7: 39 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (41)

Row 8: 41 sc blo (41)

Row 9: 41 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (43)

Row 10: 43 sc blo (43)

Row 11: 43 sc blo, + 1 sc blo, 1 sl st (45)

Row 12: 45 sc blo (45)

Parts #2-6:

Repeat *Rows 1-12* for each part of the hat (2-6 parts).

The row #12 of the previous part is counted like Row #0 for the next part.

Fold the hat right side in. Crochet with slip stitches from the bottom edge to the top (or sew with a needle). Tighten the little hole at the top with strong extra thread through 6 upper single crochets. Fasten and remove all the tips.

The hat is ready!

The technique sounds like you are doing short rows.I have a few crochet patterns that sound like a similar process. It allows you to have shapes within a shape, curves, etc.

Link to short row hats and tutorials

The tutorial is at the bottom and is free with a pattern. I think the rest of her hats are paid patterns.

Google short row and you can see lots of projects that are fun to do (although I lose my place on some of them!).

Cute free one!

Where are my manners!? I meant to start off saying that I love the texture and color of your hat! You should post it in the Hats Hats and More Hats Along! Lots of fun patterns for knitting and crochet! @J-squared is a hat making machine!

Thank you! And. I didn’t know there was a Hat Along

And, I have heard the term short rows, but I don’t think I had ever done them before. So now, I’ve learned 2 new things :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Well, I don’t make much else . If I diversified and made other things like most others on LC, there wouldn’t be as many hats.

It looks neat. I have never seen one made like this. Love the color too.

Thank you! I will try to type out the pattern tomorrow. My computer access at home isn’t ideal, so I might work on it after school tomorrow. It’s my extra help night, so I need to stay later, but nobody ever shows up :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Here’s another one!

I put this one aside for a couple of weeks after I started it (which was right after I finished the first one), and kept messing up the count. I finally got it right, and was fine after that, but I frogged the 4th section at least three times!
