Crow in pan pastel and colored pencil

I made this crow drawing for @jemimah in the Santa’s Sack swap and I’m so pleased with how it came out! I’ve been wanting to try this technique of using pan pastel to lay down a base of color and then using colored pencils to add all the detail. I’ve been practicing drawing the last few months and I’m so proud of how this came out

Here’s the finished piece after I matted it. There’s a bit of glare from the plastic.

Here’s a pic when I was trying to decide where to put the mat so I knew where to sign it. You can really see the vibrancy of the colors here.

And here’s what it looked like in the middle of doing the pan pastel layer, before adding any of the colored pencil details (I worked on the background more after this but I don’t have a pic of that).

This was such a fun project to do and I’m planning to do more pieces using these techniques. Thanks for looking!

It turned out beautifully done! The background is dreamy and the bird is so clear and detailed. Can’t wait to see more of this technique and style.

So. Good. You’ve gotten great detail in the crow and even some personality in its expression. The moodiness of the background really makes the detail of the crow stand out.

This came out so well! It’s a beautiful piece. I didn’t know colored pencils blended so well with watercolor.

It’s gorgeous, even better in real life! The pan pastel has a dreamy softness, which gives it a lot of depth. I feel very lucky to have it

this is sooooo stunning! I am so in love with the background and the gorgeous crow.

I bought some Pan Pastels a long time ago and never really liked using just them. I never thought of layering with colored pencil! Can I ask what type of paper you used?
