Cut-away owl and sailboat

I’m taking the Art of Illustration program at my library again, and this week’s theme was cut-away art.

I have an extremely difficult time working in negative space, so I’m really happy that my pictures turned out the very first time I made them!

I still haven’t mastered the art of doing cut-aways in a single picture, where the lines are all connected, but I’ve made really good progress, so I’m happy

Last time I did this, it took me 3 tries before I managed to not cut away the portions that were supposed to stay behind, lol

We made the pictures by sketching them out in pencil and then cutting away with an exacto knife.

This program is really neat. We take inspiration from children’s book illustrators to make our own art. Each week features a different type of media. The program facilitator talks a bit about the type of media and some of the artists that use it, and then we create our own art in their style. Each person is free to choose their own subject for their art.

Thanks for looking!

Congratulations on conquering the negative space! I’m really drawn to the owl, especially.

Thank you both

The owl was inspired by the art of Nikki McClure. I can’t remember which book, but I think it was “All in a day.”

That means a lot, considering how challenging I find this type of art! Thank you

Negative space is something that a lot of art students in college struggle with, so it’s totally complicated for brains to wrap themselves around. We usually think in positive space! You did a great job and I think it’s a great exercise! Negative space exercises in college made me a MUCH better artist and I try to use them when I tutor kids in art for that reason.
