I thought I was crazy enough to make a piñata. I wanted to make a donut piñata for my daughter’s birthday, with pull strings, rather than let a bunch of preschoolers loose with a bat in my house. I put aside a huge cardboard box to use, had some tan tissue paper and a ton of glue sticks standing by. Then I watched some tutorials, and learned a lot about constructing piñatas, and decided that I’m not actually that crazy.
But since I already had most of the supplies, I decided to see what I could make that would be easier on me, and at least partially survive the party. I decided on a toss game, with small bean bags. Jim & I glued 2 pieces of cardboard together, then cut out a giant donut. I cut strips of the tan tissue paper to wrap over the raw edges, using glue sticks to smooth everything down. I used bright pink tissue as the frosting, and paint pens to apply the sprinkles. I used scraps of my donut table runner fabric (prior to realizing that I needed to make a dress out of the scraps) and some sprinkle fabric, to make 4 little triangular bean bags each, and filled them with very old popcorn. (Here’s a similar tutorial to the one I used, and now can’t find.)
Somehow one of the donut bean bags is missing already. But it’s fine. The kids had a great time, and Ada has been playing with them a lot. Nothing like amusing a kid with a very low-tech toy for hours and hours.
