Easter Craftalong

We’re going to get plastic ones and fill them with candy and marshmallows. I have a bunch of Easter stickers to decorate them. I’ll still make a few dozen deviled eggs (seems my family only likes these with Easter dinner…). With coupons and specials, I can still get 18 eggs for about $4.00.

Lol the whole world is watching American egg prices right now :egg: ours aren’t 99 cents either, but prices have come down a bit after reaching a peak during the pandemic. I paid around $4 for 10 organic eggs today.

I want to make deviled eggs, too, and a sort of potato salad that we traditionally eat during Easter. Of course we’re also not going to lack chocolate!

Your talk about Easter food makes me wanna try something too. Maybe do a small Easter dinner with some good stuff.

But I have started to look at cookies. Should I do just ordinary “small cookies” (småkakor in Swedish) that I make for xmas or should I do some special Eastery ones?

I googled them and småkakor look very far from ordinary to me! What are typical Easter foods in Sweden?

I think the typical Easter food is the same as for Christmas or midsummer to be honest. Egg, pickled herring, potatoes, meatballs and ham. We really like the grilled/oven baked ham here!

About the småkakor, there are so many different ones you can make, and they have a long history too. We have a cookcook here called “7 different cookies (småkakor)”, which they update from year to year and it holds more than 7 recepies. But I think its tradition with 7 different cookies, for when you have an event.
Like, you have lots of cookies if you invite people for coffee or if it is for the funeral coffee or a celebration of some kind.
Dont get me wrong, I have eaten these cookies all my life, and my dad liked to cook and bake, and they are good cookies. So they are kind of normal to me, but I understand that they are not ordinay for other people. I guess Im home blind, thinking the grass is greener when I see all the fancy sugar cookies from Usa.

Haven’t even thought about it yet! A bit overwhelmed right now with too much stuff I have to do - mostly good stuff, but way more things than hours in the day …

Maybe next week will ease up a bit!

Seven types of cookies for an event?? I need to go to Swedish events :wink: Even though I’m from the catholic part of the Netherlands, we have all absorbed the calvinist spirit of the rest of the country and we would consider 7 different types of cookies a bit much. We do have plenty of traditional bread and cake recipes, but we usually only serve one type at a time.

For funerals, where I live traditionally we don’t serve sweet foods, but we eat a proper meal together - soup, bread, maybe some hot meat to go with the bread, and a glass of brandy. I guess this is a remnant of the days that people would have to walk to a funeral on an empty stomach, since you’re not supposed to eat before Communion, and the family and neighbours would have stayed up all night to keep a prayer vigil for the deceased. By the time the person is buried, all the mourners were very hungry! Those customs have died out but the meal after the funeral hasn’t.

I’ve been unboxing things over the past week, and I’ve reached the decoration box. If I can dig up the Easter decoration tonight, I’ll put them up house tomorrow. Most of my plants have not survived our renovation project, so I hope to get some new plants as well. Not just for Easter, I like to have houseplants that survive for years. But several moves and moving from warm to cold and dark to light places many different times has called them off. Where I live, it’s also common to get an Easter tree. I’m not really sure what the English word for it is, but it’s a few branches in a vase that are sometimes decorated. It’s a bit early for them but maybe the florist already sell them. Earlier this week I found my yellow tablecloth and put it on the table, and the house instantly looked more spring-y.

I’m not sure I’ll have the time to craft new things before Easter but I made some cards earlier that I need to put in the mail asap.

Yeah, I dont think its that common with 7 different types of cookies now, but I think when someone invite people or the Church coffee have 2 or 3 types of cookies.

That sounds like a great tradition. Is that something from your religion or a Netherland tradition? Maybe its both.
In Sweden its often coffee and cake, the closest family decide what to do. When my dad died he got cremated, and then we had a memorial lunch at a place he liked to visit. A place most towns have, where we have collected some old houses and early Swedish things as a reminder of how it was.

Oooh, how nice you also have a Easter tree. We usually take some birch branches, and put some feathers or light hanging ornaments in them.

I think it’s a mix of tradition and religion. I think food is served at funerals in most cultures around the world. The Netherlands is a pretty secular country, but you can instantly see which areas are traditionally catholic or traditionally protestant. The Dutch flavour of protestantism is very sober, strict and calvinist, catholic people are more about joy and hospitality (of course I was raised catholic so I’m biased!). So in protestant areas funerals are usually pretty short and they serve a simple cup of coffee and a slice of cake afterwards, not really because of religion anymore but because that’s what they are used to.

I think the memorial for your father sounds very fitting. I think the best way to remember a person is by doing something that reminds everyone of the deceased. It could be someone’s favourite place, someone’s favourite food, someone’s favourite music.

7 sorters kakor is such an interesting tradition. Less than 7 on the serving dish and you’re seen as stingy. More than 7 was excessive and might also be looked down on.

As a kid I was just happy there was treats :sweat_smile:

You can actually get 7 kinds done from the same type of dough. Usually some kind of shortbread situation and then you’ll shape and flavour it to make different kinds.

We are still on track to have my room finished and all the messes cleared up before Easter! I’m even slowly thinking about more decoration. The things I posted earlier in the thread are in the attic right now, and a piece of the ladder to that attic (not the one I posted the other day, we have two attics!) fell off the other day, so we can’t go up. I’m trying to reach out to our contractor to fix it but he’s not very responsive. Now my craft room is mostly set up, maybe I can craft a few quick things this weekend.

I’ve just got back from a few weeks away visiting family in New Zealand. Now Easter is nearly here! I hope I can get one or two things made for the Easter season, I’ve got several WIPs and plans sitting in the sewing room …

I havent taken out any Easter things yet. I dod somw Spring things on the first day of Spring and over the wekemd weekend I will pepper in the Easter specific things. We havent made anything new this year, but there’s still time.

I am going to make it a mission to get different colors of cloth to use in stitching. I really only have white, red and black.

I have so many colours and I often have no idea where they come from. This was a 10x10" pink scrap that had been in my stash for ages. It’s a simple pattern and no colour changes so it stitches up fast.
