A friend told me a long time ago about an app called “Flash Food.” Grocery stores will list their “about to expire food” and sell it at a discount. At the time I looked into it but ended up not using it, because there were really no stores listing anything in my region. Fast forward about 15 years. The area I lived in has exploded in growth (for better or worse…), and grocery stores are finally listing stuff.
Here’s my second batch of purchases from the app:
This whole thing cost about CND$25. $5 per cardboard box, less than $1 for the pasta (I combined some boxes into the ones you see here, that’s why the math doesn’t add up).
We got sooooo many bananas.
I cut up some to freeze for smoothies, and i mashed some to use in peanut butter banana pancakes. My daughter made some banana muffins, too.
For peanut butter banana pancakes, you just mix eggs, peanut butter, and bananas, blend it all, and then pour the batter onto a frying pan. In hindsight, I didn’t have to mash the bananas… I could have just put them in chunks into the blender. Oh well. Next time.
I really enjoyed these with some berries and maple syrup. It was really good.
We also got a loooot of potatoes. I roasted some and made roasted veggie soup, others I baked, others I made mashed potatoes out of.
Not gonna lie, I didn’t use all the potatoes because the intention was there but so was/is the utter exhaustion from all the things…
But potatoes are easy to compost and will help next year’s garden, and potentially even grow some more, so.. it’s all good.
The peppers I cut up and used in various salads and meals, including this one:
And I made more salads in a jar, too:
Overall, if you have access to this app, I’d say it’s worth it if you know you can use up the ingredients quickly and/or freeze them, and if you have the energy to shop and prep on the same days or days that are close together… which is not always the case for me.
But regardless, I feel like it was a good buy, and we saved some food from going to waste.
