Food Prep from "Flash Food" groceries

A friend told me a long time ago about an app called “Flash Food.” Grocery stores will list their “about to expire food” and sell it at a discount. At the time I looked into it but ended up not using it, because there were really no stores listing anything in my region. Fast forward about 15 years. The area I lived in has exploded in growth (for better or worse…), and grocery stores are finally listing stuff.

Here’s my second batch of purchases from the app:

This whole thing cost about CND$25. $5 per cardboard box, less than $1 for the pasta (I combined some boxes into the ones you see here, that’s why the math doesn’t add up).

We got sooooo many bananas.

I cut up some to freeze for smoothies, and i mashed some to use in peanut butter banana pancakes. My daughter made some banana muffins, too.

For peanut butter banana pancakes, you just mix eggs, peanut butter, and bananas, blend it all, and then pour the batter onto a frying pan. In hindsight, I didn’t have to mash the bananas… I could have just put them in chunks into the blender. Oh well. Next time.

I really enjoyed these with some berries and maple syrup. It was really good.

We also got a loooot of potatoes. I roasted some and made roasted veggie soup, others I baked, others I made mashed potatoes out of.

Not gonna lie, I didn’t use all the potatoes because the intention was there but so was/is the utter exhaustion from all the things…

But potatoes are easy to compost and will help next year’s garden, and potentially even grow some more, so.. it’s all good.

The peppers I cut up and used in various salads and meals, including this one:

And I made more salads in a jar, too:

Overall, if you have access to this app, I’d say it’s worth it if you know you can use up the ingredients quickly and/or freeze them, and if you have the energy to shop and prep on the same days or days that are close together… which is not always the case for me.

But regardless, I feel like it was a good buy, and we saved some food from going to waste.

What a haul! I love all the ways your family is using bananas!

I love the idea, but know I’d fall short on the meal prep needed. Sounds like a great deal though!

Also.. I love these giant jam jars from Costco.

They’re perfect for storing just about anything in the fridge, and the wide top makes for easy filling.

I’ve never heard of this program. I just looked them up and will be trying this to keep my cost of food down. Thanks! Great work on presserving what you purchased.

That’s really great. The potatoes will last a couple of weeks at least, in a cool dark place. I use them even if they get a little wrinkly or if they sprout.

I use the app as well and love it! Awesome that you were able to make use of a great deal in so many ways!

It’s fabulous to see so much potentially wasted food go to such yummy use!

I use Too Good To Go once in awhile, but haven’t tried any grocery purchases… admittedly I’ve only used it for day-old Tim Hortons, haha. Food Hero is another one I’ve seen some good deals on, but never dug into past flipping through the app.

All those bananas in your boxes are giving me muffin dreams, though! I’ll have to check Flash Food one of these days. Is it all mystery boxes or can you select certain items?

Too Good To Go doesn’t have anything for groceries in my area, except for some “treats and snacks” from a couple of “exotic grocers” (that’s the name of the stores). I haven’t tried those yet.

Flash Food actually has photos of the items you’re purchasing. In my region everyone is forthcoming about what’s in it except Loblaws. I don’t recommend getting stuff from there. They deliberately took poor photos and put moldy stuff in their boxes a couple of times. The app does say that the contents of the box may not exactly match the picture, but it always has, except for Loblaws.

@Reese52 Great to hear the app may benefit you as well

Thank you everyone for all your kind comments.

That’s a lot of potatoes and bananas!
Nice job processing it all into food and freezer stash
We have a similar app here, however in my area it’s mostly bakeries and cafes at the moment (and a pet supplies store). But more and more places are being added, so I always keep an eye on it. When I’m out and about in Tel-Aviv with my daughter, we usually check what is available around there and have our dinner sorted out that way (Tel-Aviv has a lot more options, it’s usually first to adopt these things here).
