Hats, Hats, and More Hats Along

Cute hats!

Oh, yes. Color work is not my favorite technique to do, but I needed a change from stripes. Oh, and there is an error in the instructions when going from the brim to the main part. You need to exclude one of the increases.

Thanks, I’m to the time of year where I try to use up some of my scraps.

Woo hoo! 2 more hats for this year.

The pattern is no longer available, but if someone wants it I can DM you the instructions.

You are definitely a hat making machine! I love that you share so many cool patterns.

I have definitely made more hats thanks to you!

I have some bulky weight yarn that I ordered for Christmas but it won’t arrive until Jan 3. I hope to start 2026 with some cool hats to make.

In the meantime, I am going through all my hat patterns (printed and digital) to scrap hats that I probably won’t make again and finding some favorite from the past.

My goal for 2026 is to try some colorwork/fair isle types of knit hats.

Be sure and check your favorite digital ones. Both of the ones I posted today are no longer on the yarnspirations website. Fortunately, I have hard copies.
The second half of this year has been filled with many hours sitting at hospitals, outpatient centers, and doctors’ offices with my MIL as she navigates a serious autoimmune disease. Making hats is an easily portable and time filling activity.

I always print out my patterns and have a file for them, but I forget to delete them off my computer so sometimes I reprint them. I am trying to be more efficient and organized.

I created a folder on my computer for all my downloads and then when I print them, I rename them with a P at the end for Printed. That way if I never use the pattern for some reason, I haven’t wasted paper and ink. If they are not printed after a few years, I delete them because I know there is a reason I haven’t made them yet. I also have a few standard go-tos that I just keep in my knitting bag.

Ah, that’s a good method. I hardly ever turn on my laptop now that I retired from my tax job as well as my last volunteer job, so I just use a tablet for the most part day-to-day.

First hats of 2026! This is a paid pattern from flynnknits. It is called Ripple-icious. I love combining colors and this one caught my eye because years ago I made an afghan that was turqoise, orange and cream that I loved so much but was talked into donating it to a care home. I didn’t want to do another afghan (I have so many!).

The orange yarn was purchased online, and well, it is not as orange as I wanted but close enough. I did purchase another orange so maybe the next one will be closer to what I want. The yarn is a bulky weight and is superwash merino. Relatively inexpensive from Valley Yarns. I have enough leftover yarn to make another hat or maybe some mitts or a matching cowl. Not sure yet.

Believe it or not, the pattern was very easy. I don’t do a lot of colorwork so it took a few rows to get the floats just right and not tangle my yarn. There are spots were it is a bit “tight” but the hat still fits, so for me, that is a win!

Inside of hat:

I jumped right in after finishing it to do a different color with similar yarn. I made a rookie mistake of forgetting to change out my needles so I started with a size larger for the brim and then an even larger size for the hat body. It is larger but fits me better.

I make a lot of hats for myself because my hair is thinning and I am very self-conscious about it. I find wearing hats makes me a lot more confident and warm!

They look so cozy!

Very nice work. I’ve been reading up about stranded knits, floats & such. Seems so complicated to me but the results are incredible .

Last hat from 2025:

I cast on more stitches than in the instructions since my yarn was a smaller gauge.

My goal for hats in 2026 is to learn some new techniques and stitches, both in knitting and crochet.

Your cables look great!

Same for me. I’m always on the hunt for something new. I’m getting ready to start on a hat that incorporates intarsia, which I’ve done before, but only a couple of times.

These two hats are made using a paid flynnknits.com pattern called Star Bright Beanie.

Pretty simple and really fast knits. I did make a pattern mistake on the second hat because I failed to cross off my chart. I doubt many people would even notice so I am calling it good!

Woo-hoo–4 hats in 2026! I almost used up the rust colored yarn but still have plenty of other yarn that I bought particularly for hats. Just going to take a yarn break to do some other projects…like make another project bag for knitting!

Both hats are knit with super wash merino yarn. They are super warm because the floats add extra thickness. I had originally bought a different skein to make the second hat but it seemed a shame to use up so much of it as floats (it was expensive!). I found a single ball of Noro yarn that worked well and was just as colorful. Guess I’ll have to find a special pattern for that special skein…maybe something with cables!

Over on the dead site, I had a list of crocheted hat patterns that I was working through. Sadly, that list is gone, so I’m happy to start a new one here! Thanks @AIMR for making me aware of this!

I have my first hat: Crochet Ribbed Beanie

I’ll be adding a written pattern to my post soon, I hope!

I love the texture and the color!

I decided to use up some bulky weight yarn to make a silly crochet ribbed hat as well!

I used this pattern.

Not full hats, but a head covering/ear warmers! Trying to use up the partial skeins leftover from hats!

The first one is a free pattern available all over the internet…I just read the basic instructions and then winged it to fit my head.

The second one was from this YouTube tutorial.. Pretty simple to follow, but with the yarn I was using, 15 chains proved to be too long for the loops so I double twisted the loops to make a tighter braid. I am going to make another one once I finish a hat because I know I will have more leftover yarn. I want a cream colored one of these.

One other thing that I would do differently is connect the two loops in one stitch on the very first loop. Putting the loop into two side-by-side stitches created a hole that I sewed together afterwards. That little change will make it a total non-sew, except for the button (which is decorative, not functional).

Finished two “hats” in February.

Toddler hat made from a kit. This was a request from my niece for more hats for her 2 year old. Plus, I am sending free kits to people who want them so I wanted to make sure I was giving good info on sizing!

Another easy crochet braid headband in a neutral color.
